George lit up the second he heard Layla’s promise, nearly jumping for joy out of pure excitement.

The midday sun blazed down fiercely. Everyone gathered up their gardening tools and headed back to the cabin to rest.

Layla murmured a soft reply, her voice thick with drowsiness, and soon drifted off into a light sleep.

Sunlight filtered through the tree leaves and cast dappled patterns across her face. The light highlighted her skin and delicate features, making her look especially lovely.

A light wind blew, and the tree leaves rustled overhead.

George glanced over at the sleeping Layla, then held a finger to his lips to signal Oliver and the others to stay quiet. “Layla’s asleep. Keep your voices down.”

Carson softened his chopping motions as soon as he heard the warning.

He looked at her peaceful, sleeping face. A gentle smile spread across his mouth, his eyes overflowing with deep affection.

After some time, Layla slowly woke up. Her eyes were still heavy with sleep, and a faint sun-kissed blush rested on her cheeks, giving her a sweet, innocent look.

She rubbed her eyes and turned toward Liam. “How long did I sleep? Did I rest too long?”

Liam smiled and brushed stray hairs away from her face, then rubbed her temples lightly. “Not long at all, only about thirty minutes. Lunch should be ready soon.”

Layla sat upright and noticed a thin blanket draped over her, placed there while she slept.

Since the afternoon sun burned even hotter, Yates stayed behind to watch over the cabin. The other six set off together for the nearby forest.

Thick, lush plant life filled the woods. Bright wild berries and fresh mushrooms grew everywhere.

Small woodland creatures darted through the underbrush. They fled quickly upon spotting Layla and the others, frightened by their presence.

Layla walked in the center of their group, protected on either side by Liam and Carson.

George and Oliver raced ahead to scout the trail.

Shane brought up the rear, his eyes scanning carefully for any new types of healing herbs they had not found before.

George ran over to a fruit-bearing tree, stood on his tiptoes, and picked a handful of bright red berries. He hurried back over to Layla, eager to show off his find. “Look, Layla! Tons of red berries here. They look so

sweet.”

Layla held one berry up to her nose and sniffed it to check for poison. Once she was sure it was safe, she wiped it clean and popped it into her mouth.

Sweet and sour juice spread across her tongue, and the fruit tasted wonderful.

She nodded. “This is really good. Let’s look for small saplings we can dig up and plant in our yard. Then we won’t have to climb the mountain whenever we want more fruit.”

Oliver found a cluster of fresh, brightly colored mushrooms nearby. “Layla, can you check if these are safe

to eat?”
