She listened closely. The sound was soft and sweet, full of helplessness, and clearly came from a young
creature.
Layla began to walk across the shallow stream. Carson and the others, who had been resting nearby, quickly got to their feet. “Layla, what’s wrong?”
Layla stepped into the cold running water and pointed toward a thick clump of grass beside the bank. “There’s something over there.”
She pushed the tall grass aside. A palm-sized young beast lay curled up inside.
Its fur was pure white and fluffy. Tiny antlers sprouted from the top of its head. Its big, bright eyes glistened, and fresh blood stained one of its legs. It whimpered pitifully from its wound.
Layla’s heart softened. She crouched down slowly, careful not to scare the little creature.
Instead of pulling away, the baby beast moved closer. It rubbed its fuzzy head gently against her palm, behaving completely tame.
Shane walked along the stream to join them. He glanced down at the injury. “It got cut by thorns. Nothing serious. I have healing ointment, and it will heal quickly once we apply it.”
While Shane spread medicine over the beast’s leg, Layla spoke, “What kind of animal is this?”
Carson knew more about local wildlife than anyone in their group. He leaned forward for a closer look, his brows drawing together slightly.
Though it resembled a young deer, its snow-white fur held faint hints of pink. It had no hooves-sharp. small claws stuck out from its feet.
Its tail was also unlike a regular fawn’s short, soft one; long and bushy, it looked just like a fox’s tail.
Carson shook his head. “I’ve never seen one before. It might be a species unique to Planet A13.”
Layla looked down at the beast curled safely in her arms.
The little creature stayed perfectly still, its big eyes locked on hers, overflowing with trust.
Layla made up her mind. “Let’s take it back home and treat its wound. If we leave it out here alone, it probably won’t survive.”
No one objected to Layla’s request. Every man nodded in agreement.
George crouched beside her and reached out to pet the creature’s head.
The young beast clearly favored only Layla.
It let out an unhappy little whine, turned its head, and buried its face against Layla’s chest to avoid his touch.

George’s eyes went wide.
So we have a new rival for Layla’s affection.

He frowned and opened his mouth to complain, but Layla stood up while holding the small animal.
“You startled it.” Layla shot George a gende, reproachful look.
George pouted, looking hurt, “I only wanted to pet it.”
Layla kept walking, carrying the creature back toward their cabin.
Once inside, she pulled out a small basket that had once held potatoes and lined it with dry hay.
She also laid down some old, unwanted clothing to make a soft bed for the beast.
The beast lay quietly inside the basket, never taking its eyes off Layla. Every now and then, it let out a sweet, faint whimper.
“We,should give it a name, Carson said suddenly. “We can’t keep calling it ‘the little creature’ forever.”
Everyone began thinking over possible names.
George spoke first, “How about Snowball? Look at its white, fluffy coat. That name fits it perfectly.”
Oliver disagreed at once. “That’s far too plain. I vote for Amir. It sounds elegant and beautiful.”
George rolled his eyes and huffed. “You are always trying to sound fancy.”
Layla stared at the small beast for a long moment before speaking softly, “Let’s call it Marshie.”
The instant she had seen it, she had thought of the marshmallows she used to love.
Marshie responded right away. It rubbed its head against the edge of the basket and made a noise, accepting its new name.
Marshie officially became part of their cabin household. With Shane’s medical care, it was soon running and jumping around without trouble.
George folded his arms and turned toward Oliver. “Ever since we brought it home, that little thing has stuck right by Layla’s side.”
