Chapter 48 Layla Might Be Better
[Wow, the hint to leave is clear.]

[So rude! I used to think Layla wasn’t good enough for Shane. Turns out they’re perfect for each other-two peas in a rude, inconsiderate pod!]
[Who’s the rude one? Can’t you see they have work to do? You’re the one with no manners, overstaying your welcome!]
[Layla never invited Stella. Showing up uninvited and not even knocking is the real rude move, isn’t it?]
Stella could tell Layla was shooing her out.
She lowered her gaze, her eyes reddening even more, as if she’d been deeply wronged. She looked up at Liam. “Liam…”
She let the word hang, leaving it for someone else to jump to her defense-her usual tactic.
Liam was still thinking about Stella’s tearful outburst. His heart softened. He squeezed her wrist and stood up. “Let’s go back.”
Stella gave a small, submissive nod, still wearing that wounded expression, and followed Liam
out.
[Talking about giving Liam back to Layla, but still clinging and whining to him. I told you she’s two-faced, wanting to have her cake and eat it too!]
[Can you keep your mouths clean? She’s still young. She can’t help her feelings; it’s instinct to reach out to someone she cares about. What’s wrong with that? Don’t be so harsh on her! She’s only twenty-one!]
[Oh, so it’s different when it’s your precious Stella? Did you forget Layla was also twenty-one? Weren’t you the ones slinging insults at her, calling her “toxic trash”? Have you forgotten Layla and Stella were born on the exact same day?]
[Layla did nothing wrong and was harassed online for half a year. Stella is only facing a tiny fraction of that and can’t handle it? Get lost!]
[When will this pointless back-and-forth ever end?]
[You get lost too!]
Liam walked over to where Layla was working. The combat knife in her hand had already sliced cleanly through the lion’s hide. The blade flashed between her fingers, and in moments, a sizable section of pelt was removed. A strange emotion flickered in his eyes.

“I’ll come back for the jerky later,” he said.
He also picked up the bag of jerky Stella had brought over.

Layla gave a noncommittal “Mhm,” not even looking up. Her knife circled the lion’s front leg joint. With a twist of her wrist, the leg separated from the body.
[Wow…]
[Aaaaah! What am I seeing!]
[Go on, keep talking! Let’s see if your mouths are faster than Layla’s knife.]
[So crude. No wonder no male is drawn to her.]
[Is your only purpose in life to be desired by males?]
Liam held Stella’s hand as they left, the image of Layla deftly wielding the knife and processing the lion replaying in his mind.
How can she be so… efficient?
It was the same yesterday with the deer, and before that with the wolves and the lion. She didn’t seem scared of anything.
She was different from other females. She wasn’t soft or delicate, and she didn’t seem to need to rely on anyone.
They were right; she wasn’t poised and graceful like the society girls.
She was rough, stubborn, held grudges, and was a bit cunning.
But for some reason, he couldn’t dislike her.
On the contrary, the sheer vitality in her every word and action was… hard to look away from.
Noticing Liam’s distraction, Stella lowered her head and let out a soft sob.
Liam’s attention snapped back. “Why are you crying?”
Stella shook her head. “I’m sorry.”
Her voice was choked, the perfect tone of someone hurting and utterly wronged.
Liam’s heart gave a little squeeze. “It’s alright, don’t think about that stuff. You’re fine.”
But… Layla might be better.

Stella couldn’t hear his thoughts, but she could see he was distracted.

“Let’s go back. It’s getting late,” Liam said, holding her hand as they walked. “Wolf Boss and Prince Oliver will worry if they return and we’re not there.”
