Chapter 49 A Walking Disaster

Three trending hashtags dominated feeds- “FateAgainst Stella,” “NurtureOverNature,” “LaylaLacks Etiquette.” Their widespread popularity filled Fiona with bitter envy.

The Grant family poured such vast sums into her.

They side with the adopted girl and slander the true heiress. As rumors say, Stella is indeed utterly spoiled by the head of the Grant family.

“So they bought traction for these topics. Fine, it isn’t our money anyway, and it only boosts the show’s overall engagement. Let them do as they please.”

As long as the show itself avoided negative backlash and only Layla was the target of slander, he had no concerns at all.

After all, Layla had originally been cast on the show solely to serve as Stella’s foil.

Now Layla was steadily gaining popularity in her own right. She was no longer universally despised and had even begun to gather loyal fans.

Though her following paled in comparison to Stella’s massive fanbase built from years of child stardom, any conflict between their fanbases meant more viewership buzz.

The fiercer the fan wars grew, the more viral the show became.

“Wait!” Michael exclaimed in alarm. “Who turned off Layla’s Vanguard feed?”

“Prof. Slater’s is offline too!” another crew member monitoring online activity shouted. “It appears Prof. Slater disabled it himself.”

“Prof. Slater?” Fiona paused. Recalling the confidential instructions from upper management, she nodded. “There’s nothing to worry about.”

Before the show’s premiere, Fiona’s team had been issued an official directive from the Empire’s military authorities.

It was a lengthy official document. In short, Shane held full, unrestricted autonomy throughout the show, despite taking part in it.

Everyone had assumed Liam was the untouchable figure on the show.

Yet, according to the official notice, Shane was under constant imperial scrutiny.

Fiona ordered, “From now on, Shane has complete independent control of his Vanguard.”

“This is a disaster! Fans are flooding our official accounts in outrage. They’re demanding we either run the show properly or shut it down completely.

“Viewers are beginning to claim the show is entirely scripted and fake!

“They’re accusing Layla and Prof. Slater of receiving unfair special treatment!

“No, they’re turning on the production crew for failing to fulfill their duties!”

With every new update from the staff, Fiona’s face drained of color.

Backlash against the production team was manageable. Criticism directed at Layla was of no consequence.

But they were attacking Shane.

Upper management had explicitly ordered them to give Shane special treatment. Between that and his constant unexplained absences, Fiona quickly realized how vital his Starcore Ore search was to imperial interests.

If the situation escalated further, the entire show would be terminated.

“Contain this! Fix it immediately!” Fiona’s voice trembled as she gestured at the staff. “Suppress all harmful trending topics and issue official statements where necessary.”

“But… how can we possibly explain this?” Michael finally grasped the severity of the crisis.

Fiona took a deep breath. “Release a statement claiming device malfunction, and that repairs are underway. Then contact Prof. Slater-no, contact Layla directly. Tell them to finish what they’re doing quickly and re-enable their Vanguard feeds.”

Michael said, “As for the suppressed topics… most of the hostile commentary comes from Stella’s fans, and the Grant family is the one behind the paid trending campaigns. This puts us in an impossible position.”

“Impossible or not, suppress them!”

Fiona had always had a fiery temper, and she was seething with fury now.

“If I had known Stella would be such an incessant nuisance, I never would have cast her in the first place!

“The nation’s beloved sweetheart? The public darling? She’s nothing but a walking disaster! “All that talk of noble grace and innate virtue, my foot! She is inferior to Layla in every single way. I cannot begin to understand what the head of the Grant family is thinking.”

Watching Fiona’s explosive fury, Michael and the rest of the crew dared not provoke her further.

Barely three minutes after their Vanguard feeds were cut, Layla received an incoming communication from the production team.

She ignored it completely.
