Chapter 51 For Protection

Shane was the exception. He had no complaints about relying on Layla.

He readily agreed with Layla’s plan. “We just need to produce less salt than the show provides them. They’ll come to us for trades.”

“That’s exactly what I thought. They aren’t foolish.” Layla nodded, then tilted her chin at him, signaling for him to turn his Vanguard back on.

She said, “We apologize for the interruption, everyone. There was a technical glitch and our connection dropped. Can you see us now?”

That was the excuse the production team put out.

Layla glanced at the pointed questions flooding the live chat.

“You’d have to ask Prof. Slater about that,” she laughed, shooting him a teasing glance. “He went to fetch a clay pot, tripped on the way, and shattered it completely.”

The audience couldn’t tell if she was telling the truth. But considering he’d accidentally knocked himself ou before, it did sound like something he might do.

Shane gave her a helpless look. True, his first impression had been less than stellar, but lately he hadn’t been dead weight at all. And here she was, making fun of him in front of everyone. She shouldn’t do that.

Yet when he caught the playful glint in her eyes, he decided it was fine.

She looked happy. And as long as she was happy, nothing else mattered.

Layla didn’t notice his expression, but the audience caught the brief flash of warmth and soft affection in his

gaze.

[Aaaaah! Did anyone see Prof. Slater’s face? He’s so fond of her!]

[So endearing! Oh wow… snakes are cold-blooded, right? How can he look so gentle and warm?]*

[Who made the stoic professor soft? Say her name loud!]

[Layla!]

[Layla!]

[Layla! You’re my goddess!]

[Ugh, you are so cringe, just leave.]

Layla paid no mind to the chat. Satisfied they’d bought her lie, she returned to her task.

Stella ruined everything. She delayed the treehouse I was building for Shane.

Chapter 51 For Protection

Preparing the hunted game came first, though. Left too long, it would spoil. Even dried meat wouldn’t retain its flavor well afterward.

When food was scarce, Layla would eat nearly anything edible. But when she had choices, her standards were high.

She never wanted to taste rotten, putrid meat ever again-not even a bite.

She began processing the lion swiftly. Glancing casually at Shane, she asked, “In the animal world, females are usually larger and stronger. So why are beastkin females only expected to stay home and/raise offspring?”

Shane was rinsing the wild greens he’d gathered, answering without hesitation, “For protection.”

“Protecting whom?”

“Females.”

“Why do they need protection?”

Shane paused, caught off guard by her question.

Layla pressed further, “Don’t you have female students at Crownpeak University? Aren’t many of them more skilled than the males?”

Shane was stumped. Of course, the university enrolled both genders. “Males vastly outnumber females. Still, some female students are far more talented.”

Layla asked, “Then why are males so much more numerous? Females are clearly not inferior.”

He frowned. “That isn’t the school’s fault. Most females choose to return home after graduation to manage households and raise children. Logically, pouring extensive resources into them is inefficient.”

Layla frowned, truly confused. “Even the gifted ones have to give up their studies just to raise families?”
