Chapter 52 A Lack of Respect
(Males have no place in this conversation!]
[I’m female, and I enjoy not having to work. What even is the point of studying? It’s useless. My father will provide for me until I’m mated, and my mates will take care of me afterward. Females are meant to live easy lives.]
[I’m female too, and I think we have it great. Some people just aren’t satisfied with anything.]/
[Women are never content. You bear no responsibilities, yet you still complain. Do you have any idea how grueling construction, mining, and military labor are? How life-threatening those occupations truly are].
“Are you upset?” Shane asked.
to dry.
He had finished rinsing the wild greens, blanched them, and spread them out on a bamboo mat to dry. When he turned back, he noticed Layla was chopping the meat with unnecessary force.
Layla slammed the axe down, cracking the lion’s leg bone clean through.
Shane stepped back abruptly.
[Holy crap! I thought that axe was coming for my leg!]
[Same! I dropped my phone!]
[Why is she suddenly so furious? Who got on her nerves?]
[Prof. Slater! What did you do to anger Layla?]
Shane finally realized their earlier discussion had bothered her. “Females are vastly outnumbered by males -over a seven-to-one ratio. The Empire has no choice but to implement protective policies for females.”
“That isn’t protection,” Layla retorted. She tossed the axe aside and picked up a combat knife to slice the meat. “The Empire is only safeguarding its birth rate. At this rate, the gender imbalance will never improve.”
“Why?” Shane sat beside her and picked up another knife, helping her cut the meat into strips.
He picked up skills quickly. Anyone with the precision required for mech work could easily learn to butcher
meat.
“It all comes down to a lack of respect,” Layla said.
She tossed the fatty trimmings into the pot to render into tallow, stirring constantly as they melted.
Layla continued, “Is this what you call respect? Respect means honoring their choices and independence. Not confining them to homes purely for the sake of reproduction.”
“They aren’t confined,” Shane said, pausing to look at her.
“Not confined?” Layla let out a cold laugh. “If even Crownpeak University has so few female students, what of the rest? Are there any females at other institutions? Do some schools refuse to admit women entirely?”

Shane fell silent for a moment. “Some do… but females are expected to marry.”
“So are males!” Layla’s voice sharpened. “Why is a mated male viewed as stable, while a female is labeled an ‘unstable factor’? We don’t steal, we don’t harm others. How are we unstable?”
[Oh my stars, I’m a Layla fan for life after that line.]
[Same! She said everything I’ve always wanted to. I never wanted to stay home and have kids. graduated from Crownpeak and won the mock trial championship. My dad tied me up and forced me to mate with. three strangers. Six years of marriage, six kids-only two made it.]
[Me too. Forced into mating. I was even restrained on my wedding night. Three children, only one lived. My life is over.]
[I don’t get it either. I’m polite, law-abiding, and clean-living. How am I “unstable”? No job will hire me. Interviewers keep telling me to go home and have children. I have nowhere to turn. Maybe I should/just give up.]
Layla glanced up and caught that last comment in the chat.
“What’s with all this talk of giving up? If any of you are at your breaking point, just survive for now. Wait until I claim Planet A13. I’ll hire you all. We have an entire planet to build up.”
The live chat fell quiet for a moment.
Shane’s head shot up too. From his angle, he only saw her profile, hunched over the stove in an unrefined
posture.
