Chapter 53 Wanna Make a Bet?
“I won’t cry, and none of you should either,” Layla said.
Shane watched her, and in that moment she seemed to glow, radiant enough to hold his gaze entirely.
Layla was not a sentimental person. She noticed the live chat had calmed considerably. Though there were still plenty of doubters, most were now rooting for her to succeed. It warmed her heart.
The tallow in the pot was nearly finished rendering. She scooped out the fried cracklings, placed half in a pouch, and set the rest on a clay plate. She sprinkled salt over them and set the plate on the table.
Shane glanced at the cracklings, placed far from him this time, and understood at once.
Layla was still upset with him.
Before, she had always set them right beside him. Now they were placed across the space.
His lips pressed together, and his expression dimmed briefly.
He had upset her.
Yet everything he had said was true.
Still, because she was hurt and had argued against his beliefs, he couldn’t help wondering if he had always been so narrow-minded.
So many universities refused to admit females. Layla was right-women were almost entirely excluded from academia and public life.
Even Stella, heiress to the Grant family with every privilege imaginable, had been raised from childhood only to become appealing to males.
She had been a famous child entertainer, but upon mating, she would still be expected to return home.
She had five mates… no, four now.
She might gain more later. With four mates, she would be expected to bear at least one child for each.
Thanks to the Grant family’s wealth, servants would raise her children. But pregnancy and childbirth alone would take four years minimum.
By then, the entertainment world would have long moved on. She would be forgotten, confined to domestic life for good.
As he thought this, Shane paused.
He finally realized Layla had been right all along.
Those females did not choose to abandon their education and lives for family. They had no other option.
If schools rejected them, and companies refused to hire them…

Chapter 53 Wanna Make a Bet?
Crushed by family pressure, with no way to earn their own livelihood, they had no choice but to mate/and bear children, entirely dependent on their mates.
“You might be right,” Shane spoke abruptly.
Layla, busy frying meat strips, was caught off guard. She turned to find him deep in thought.
“What you said makes complete sense,” he added.
Layla let out a soft smile. “Of course it does.”
She tilted her chin toward him. “Wanna make a bet?”
“On what?” Shane asked.
“On whether Planet A13 will ever hire female workers in the future.”
[Bet! Prof. Slater, take the bet! I don’t believe sheltered females can endure real hard labor!]
[Exactly! Those females have been coddled their whole lives. They probably can’t even wash a dish, yet claim they can support themselves? Ridiculous.]
[Whether we were “protected” or controlled all our lives, I know the truth.]
[Can’t eat this, can’t touch that-always with the excuse that “it will harm pregnancy.” I’m only thirteen. How could I even be pregnant?]
[They claim females aren’t fit for housework, yet I’ve handled all my chores since I was little. My father said girls are only raised to be married off, and that he should’ve drowned me at birth if I couldn’t even manage simple tasks.]
[I was supposed to have three older sisters. Now I’m the eldest. You all know what happened to them.]
Staring into Layla’s bright, confident eyes, Shane couldn’t help a faint smile. “Very well. I’ll take your bet.”
“Deal,” Layla said. “Whoever loses must grant the other one a single wish. As long as it is legal and moral, it must be fulfilled.”
“Agreed.” Shane glanced up at the Vanguard. “Everyone here will be our witnesses.”
Layla raised an eyebrow. “Oh? Making it official?”
[That’s right, we’re all witnesses! Don’t go back on your word if you lose, Layla!]
[Prof. Slater is the one who shouldn’t renege!]
