Chapter 59 My Natural Predator
Layla instinctively pulled the young man behind her, her eyes warily fixed ahead. Faint sounds of hopping and chirping echoed from within the trees.
“What is that?” Layla asked.
The boy behind her sniffled. “It’s my natural predator.”
[Natural predator? If I remember right, Yates Ashford is a pika beastkin, right?]
[Pika beastkin… So his natural predator would be…]
Layla was still confused when a boxy-faced fox hopped out from the bushes.
[Of course!]
[What else was I expecting!]
Upon seeing the fox, Layla froze for a moment. It was… rather unattractive.
She turned to Yates. “That thing? That’s your natural predator?”
Yates was petrified, his hands clinging tightly to Layla’s shirt, his voice trembling. “P-please save me… my poor little pika life…”
Layla then recalled that the boy was a pika beastkin.
Pikas, small alpine mammals, had countless natural predators.
And foxes happened to be their primary hunters.
“But you’re a beastkin, not a wild animal. Why are you so terrified of it?”
“I… I wish I wasn’t… I c-can’t help it…”
He truly couldn’t. Layla could clearly feel how violently he was shaking as he clutched her clothes.
The fox sat across from them, sized Layla up, then tilted its head, peering past her toward Yates.
Even though Yates was in human form and not a wild pika, the fox still perceived him as prey.
Layla patted his hand. She hadn’t wanted to, but he was on the verge of tearing her shirt. She had no intention of showing her shoulder on stream, so she attempted to soothe him.
“It’s alright. You’re in human form; it can’t harm you.”
“I-it’s… it’s drooling!”
It was rather unsettling. Anyone would be frightened at the sight of their natural predator salivating over them. For a timid pika, merely standing upright and speaking was already impressive.
Layla genuinely understood his fear.

Chapter 59 My Natural Predator
Yet he was far too petrified to move.
“How about you shift into your beast form, and I’ll carry you away?”
“Will that work? If I shift, I’ll turn into a pika.”
[Probably…?]
[But if he turns into a pika, he’ll become literal prey.]
[He can’t move as he is anyway. Layla can’t carry him in human form. Shifting is the better choice.]
Yates reached the same conclusion. He nodded. “Alright, I’ll shift. But you have to act fast!”
“Got it.” Layla nodded. “I’ll be quick.”
“Don’t just ‘be quick”!” Yates wailed, yet he transformed instantly. The moment he shifted into a pika, he leaped straight into Layla’s arms.
The second he changed forms, the fox lunged forward.
Layla shielded Yates within her arms, dodged aside, and before the fox could react, she shifted into her beast form and soared into the sky.
Back at camp, Shane was shaping clay, though it was unclear what he was creating. He spotted Layla flying back, with something small clutched in her talons.
Viewers in the live chat noticed his cheerful expression and asked why.
Shane replied brightly, “Layla’s back. She brought something back with her. Looks small, maybe a rabbit or something.”
He clicked his tongue, set the clay down, and went to toss some hay into the rabbit hutch.
[Oh, Prof. Slater, you’re so oblivious! That’s not prey, that’s a rival!]
[Prey? She held him in her arms! Has she ever carried you like that? She held him so tightly!]
Shane’s good mood instantly faded at the live chat comments.
She carried him back. Held him close.
When he had knocked himself out, Layla hadn’t carried him. Now she had carried someone else, held him ‘so intimately.
Aaaaaaaah!
The pink spoonbill landed, and the pika held in her talons shifted back into human form.
Only then did Layla get a proper look at the boy. He appeared around seventeen or eighteen, with a youthful face, shaggy hair falling over his eyes, and an overall gentle, harmless aura.
