Chapter 60 My Ship Has Sunk
But it didn’t seem to make any difference at all. Layla hadn’t noticed Shane in the slightest.
“Ahem!” He coughed twice more.
“Are you alright, Prof. Slater?” Yates asked, eyeing him cautiously.
[Wow, he’s really, trying so hard for attention! Prof. Slater wanted Layla to notice him, yet Yates was the on who picked up on it.]
[His face is priceless. I’ve been his student for nearly six years, and I’ve never seen him make that expression before.]
[Six years? So you’re on a two-year extension?]
[Well… life happens, no need to dwell on it.]
[Life “happens”? That’s one way to put it.]
[You know, the way Yates is trying to endear himself to Prof. Slater is kind of cute.]
[What’s cute about it? Snakes prey on pikas too. Prof. Slater is another of Yates’ natural predators.]
Shane had not expected this. He had been so obvious, yet Layla paid him no mind-instead, his rival had.
Ugh! What rival? This little pika doesn’t even count!
But Layla brought him back herself!
This pika is useless anyway. I’m far more capable!
Still, she carried him back!
I can make pots, bowls, tables, chairs, and cook. I know countless wild edibles and can forage mushrooms too!
“Can you do housework?” Layla’s voice suddenly cut through Shane’s internal monologue,
Yates’ eyes lit up. He completely overlooked Shane’s discomfort and nodded vigorously. “Yes! I can cook, do laundry, and weave all sorts of things from grass!”
He looked up at Layla hopefully. “Can I stay?”
“Layla.” Shane stepped forward before she could respond, his expression cold as he reminded her, “This is a dating show.”
“So what?” she asked.
“So what? Do you even know the rules? If you let him stay, are you planning to pursue a short-term or long-
term romantic bond with him?”
“You and I aren’t in a romantic bond, yet you’ve been staying with me this entire time.”

Chapter 60 My Ship Has Sunk
Shane froze, utterly stunned by her words. He had never imagined Layla’s perception of their relationship and his own was completely at odds.
[Stunned, huh? You weren’t moping a second ago. Why the long face now? Not in the mood anymore?]
[Prof. Slater had probably already pictured the wedding, and Layla hits him with-we aren’t romantic.]
[So all this time, Layla just saw him as someone mooching off her?]
[Moocher is a little harsh. I’d say partners. He brings the knowledge, she brings the strength. They complement each other well.]
[Aaaaah! My ship has sunk.]
[Stop screaming. Shane is far more broken up than you are.]
Shane looked as though he might break on the spot. He stared at Layla in disbelief. “We aren’t in a romantic relationship either?”
“Are you serious? You’re Stella’s…” She trailed off, glancing up at Shane’s grim expression, and felt a flicker of guilt for no clear reason.
But why should she feel guilty?
Things between Shane and Stella were already complicated. Even if he claimed there was no engagement, who knew what the future held?
On top of that, there were the constraints of the original plot. Layla did not believe these novel characters could escape their predetermined fates.
She had read enough tales to know this much. The more vital a character was to the plot, the tighter fate clung to them.
Shane was one of Stella’s five destined mates, the original heroine. There was no way he could break free from his narrative so easily.
Most importantly, Shane was still following his canonical arc right now.
In the original book, he had first lingered around her for a time, before eventually gravitating toward Stella.
In Layla’s eyes, Shane remained bound by the plot.
That extended to her as well. Even though she constantly told herself to stay away from the main cast, events kept pulling them together regardless.
Even ignoring any faint affection Layla held for Shane beyond simple companionship, the plot’s course alone ensured she would never grow attached to him.
Besides, her only real reason for joining the show was the grand prize.
Romance had never been her goal, especially not getting tangled up with the heroine’s destined mate. The farther she kept from him, the better.
Having sorted out her thoughts, Layla brushed Shane aside and turned back to Yates. “You can stay, but I
