Beast Love Show: All For Her (by Sylvester Raven) novel Chapter 61

Chapter 61 A Trial Run

“I will work hard!” As if terrified of being sent away and forced to face that dreadful fox again, Yates nodded vigorously. Worried that Layla might still be dissatisfied, he darted his eyes around the yard. “Don’t treat me like an outsider. Just tell me what needs doing, and I’ll do it.”

At least Layla was pleased with his attitude. She gave a nod. “Today’s a trial run. You get a meal. If you do well, you can stay.”

Yates said, “No problem. What should I do now?”

Layla carried out a bucket of seawater and set up the distillation apparatus over the fire. “You watch this When the water jar here is full, swap it out. Pour what’s left in the distillation pot into this jar here. Got it?”

The water jar collected fresh water.

The leftover brine was, of course, for making salt.

Genius mech designer that he was, Shane was something else. Even when Layla was studying back on Earth, she’d never seen such a convenient device. And this was just hand-molded clay. She couldn’t even imagine how powerful something he made with precision instruments would be.

“Got it. Don’t worry, Layla. I’ll keep a close eye on it.”

Layla nodded, then turned back to building Shane’s treehouse.

Shane stood to one side, watching Layla speak with Yates without so much as a glance his way. He was deeply displeased.

But then he saw Layla go back to building his treehouse, and his mood brightened considerably.

She said she didn’t like him, but deep down she was still thinking about him.

He understood.

[I’m getting major “mediocre guy who’s way too confident” vibes from Prof. Slater right now.]

[Don’t just think it—he is that. “She turned me down, but she’s still going out of her way for me, so she must still care.”]

[Isn’t that true?]

[From where I’m sitting, she can’t wait for him to move out of her little house.]

Shane wasn’t watching the live chat, or his heart would have been breaking right about then.

Layla had thought someone would come tomorrow to trade for salt. She hadn’t expected it to happen so

soon.

It was the male beastkin from Emily’s cabin, Jacob Hall.

A long-haired beauty of ambiguous gender, his hair black at the roots and white at the tips-very distinctive.

If she hadn’t known in advance that he was male, Layla might have suspected he was actually female

But this male wasn’t to be trifled with. Having read the original book, Layla wasn’t about to let her guard down just because of his face.

Because Jacob was a honey badger beastkin.

Yes, that fearless, no-nonsense creature-the kind that lived for a fight.

Cross him even a little, and he’d chase them down without eating or sleeping until he bit them back.

In the original book, he caused Stella no small amount of trouble.

“The salt trade isn’t a joke, is it?” Jacob caught her staring at him, but he didn’t mind.

He knew what he looked like. People looked. It didn’t cost him anything.

And he actually quite liked the admiration in Layla’s eyes.

“No, it’s real!” Layla hurried into the stone cave to fetch the salt and show him. “How much do you want to trade?”

She glanced at the large bag behind Jacob. Looked pretty heavy.

“Eighty pounds for starters,” Jacob said, heaving the cloth sack of meat onto the table.

Layla took a bamboo tube, filled it heaping with salt, and poured it into his bag. Then she added a little extra and tucked it in. “Your family’s big, and you’re my first customer, so I’m giving you a little extra. Come back when you run out.”

“You’re straightforward.” Jacob took the salt bag. “Much better than Rowan.”

Rowan Carter was another male from Emily’s cabin. His beast form was a Somali lion-a small breed of lion. In the original book, he was jokingly called the slothlion.

So being called better than Rowan wasn’t exactly high praise.

Jacob had swapped a big bag for a small one. He pointed at the large bag. “Want to weigh it?”

Layla lifted it, tested the heft. It felt about right. “No need. I trust you.”

“See, that’s what I mean. Better than Rowan.”

Layla didn’t feel complimented at all.

“Can I ask you something?” Jacob’s eyes landed on the bag on the table.
