Chapter 62 Staying Alive
“People always have more patience with beautiful things.”
“Fair enough.” Jacob nodded. “But you just dropped something this big so casually? I thought you were going to hold out for the entire year. Aren’t you worried I’ll be your competition?”
“You’re all rich. You joined the show for the fame. I’m different. I’m broke. I joined the show for this planet. Once I sell it, I might scrape my way into being rich too.”
Jacob didn’t press further. He said, “Thanks,” and left.
Layla watched him go, then noticed Yates’ bucket of seawater was almost done distilling. She called him over to kill the fire.
“I’ll show you once. Let’s see if you can pick it up.”
She took the meat out of the bag.
Emily’s family, it seemed, were honest folk. The meat they’d given her was already butchered-no bones, just clean meat.
And they hadn’t deliberately trimmed off the fat to leave her only the lean.
Good people.
Of course, at this point, Layla thought just about anyone seemed decent, as long as they weren’t from Stella’s household.
Well, except for Caleb.
He hadn’t done anything yet, but his portrayal in the original book was enough to make Layla want to keep her distance.
Yates squatted beside Layla and studied her intently.
Male beastkin came with a toolkit, but his was still in the burrow he’d dug for himself. He could only take the knife from Layla’s hand and try.
Layla watched him cut. He seemed handy enough. “You’ve cooked before?”
“Yes.” Yates nodded, then scratched his head a little sheepishly. “But I don’t really know how to cook meat.”
Layla understood. Pikas were herbivores. He didn’t eat meat, so it made sense that he’d never learned to prepare it.
Although beastkin weren’t exactly the same as animals, most still retained some of their animal nature.
Take Yates. He was a beastkin. His digestive system could handle meat. But pikas didn’t eat meat, so neither did he.
“Layla, I can raise rabbits.” Yates said, spotting the rabbits in the yard. Desperate to stay, he racked his brain for any way he could be useful.

Chapter 62 Staying Alive
If he got thrown out, he’d have to face that fox again.
That would be the death of a pika!
Pikas and rabbits ate more or less the same things. When he foraged for himself, he could just gather a little extra for the rabbits. No trouble at all.
Layla had already decided to keep him. He worked efficiently and had a good eye for what needed doing,
“Do you still have your toolkit? You didn’t lose it while running for your life, did you?”
Shane was sitting to the side, shaping clay. When he heard Layla ask that, his eyes instantly turned a cold, verticalslitted green as he fixed his gaze on Yates.
Yates glanced at Shane, trembling. If he remembered correctly… did the snake diet include pikas? /
Ahhh! Why is Prof. Slater staring at me like that? Is he going to kill me?
He just wanted to survive. He wasn’t trying to compete with Shane for Layla.
Though Shane had misunderstood, Yates chose to stay. Remaining meant possible death, while leaving guaranteed it. Urgently, he told Layla his toolkit was completely untouched and intact, and that he would retrieve it for her tomorrow.
Layla happily agreed.
Shane heard the cheerfulness in her voice and felt even more aggrieved
Usually, Layla loved teasing him. But today, with this boy around, all her attention had been stolen away.
Layla must have sensed that something was off with Shane’s mood.
But she was under no obligation to counsel Stella’s mate.
After teaching Yates how to fry the meat strips, Layla went back to building Shane’s treehouse.
Shane’s temper subsided again.
The chill radiating from him dissipated, and Yates grew a little bolder. He arranged the fried meat strips on a plate and cautiously shuffled over to Shane. “Prof. Slater, would you like some meat strips?”
Shane’s hands were still caked in clay. He intended to build a device to analyze the bird droppings near the Starcore Ore deposits, so he could pinpoint further ore locations.
Yates came over to curry favor. Shane’s expression remained sour, but when it came to food, he truly had little resistance.
