Chapter 71 The Fox and the Water Buckets

Layla had mentioned she was getting tired of jerky and wanted to switch things up.

“I can also make cured meat,” Yates said. “Want to give it a try, Prof. Slater?”

Shane figured Layla would probably like that too, so he gave a nod.

[The two of them are suddenly getting along? Feels weird. So, anyway, we’ve had people from Stella’s cabin Emily’s cabin, and Talia’s cabin all come by to trade for salt. That just leaves Hanna’s cabin, right? Haven’y they been out of salt forever?]

[Their situation’s complicated. If you’re not watching closely, you wouldn’t know. I bounce around streams, and even I pop over there sometimes and nearly lose my mind.]

[Seriously, it’s infuriating. Layla’s cabin is the only one where the female does the hunting. Even with Emily —tough as she is—Jacob and the others never let her lift a finger.]

[Don’t compare anyone to Layla’s cabin. Prof. Slater may not hunt, but at least he brings food back every time he goes out. What does Caleb do? He just lies around in the cabin all day making Hanna do the hunting.]

[Guys, don’t even bother hoping. I just checked-Hanna’s cabin isn’t coming to trade today.]

[Why not? Didn’t Hanna catch anything? That can’t be right. She’s female, sure, and not that strong, but she’s a fox beastkin. She can still bag small game. She’s been doing all the hunting this whole time, hasn’t she? Did she just not get enough?]

[Go see for yourselves. Y’all go take a look. I’m about to explode. Why do I have to witness someone so shameless?]

Layla hadn’t expected to run into Hanna on her way to get seawater.

Hanna clearly wasn’t very strong. She was struggling with two buckets of water.

As Layla passed her, she could clearly see sweat dripping down Hanna’s forehead.

She shook her head, confused.

It wasn’t that Layla thought a female always had to be coddled and protected. But when two people were together, they were supposed to share the load.

Hauling water-something Hanna clearly struggled with-was exactly the kind of chore that should have been Caleb’s, if they were dividing the work properly.

The beach was a long way from their cabin. Hanna would be lugging those two buckets back for ages.

Layla had run into Hanna on her way to the beach. By the time Layla started heading back with her own buckets, she caught up to Hanna again.

She hadn’t planned on talking to her. Hanna had been pretty rude to her yesterday. But Hanna was just being pushed around by the plot, and Layla couldn’t force her to change.

Chapter 71 The Fox and the Water Buckets

Hell, she couldn’t even control her own thoughts and feelings right now, let alone help anyone else.

Just thinking about the completely uncalled-for feelings she’d developed for Shane made her feel even

worse.

But then, as she walked past Hanna, Hanna actually called out to her.

“Ms. Hale.” Hanna’s voice was quiet, and she sounded guilty.

Layla slowed her pace a little and fell in step beside her. “What’s up?”

“About yesterday… I’m sorry,” Hanna said softly.

“It’s fine.” Layla shook her head. “You can’t help it.”

Hanna blinked, confused.

Can’t help it? What did that mean?

[What does Layla mean by that? Does she know something? Spill it, Layla! Tell us! What does she mean by “can’t help it”? What’s making her do all the hunting and hauling water?]

[I’m losing my mind over here. Oh my god. How does a male like that even exist? How does a female like that even exist?]

“I can help it,” Hanna said after a long silence, just as Layla was starting to think she wouldn’t get a response.

Layla just said, “Oh,” and left it at that.

She’d figure it out eventually. Just not yet.

Layla didn’t know what to say.

That Caleb would eventually betray her? That she’d end up ruined?

But the way Hanna had defended him yesterday made Layla wonder-would she even believe it?

In the Beast World, fox beastkin already had to deal with all those “vixen” stereotypes. After the scandal-the intimate photos leaked by Caleb himself-Hanna could never shake that reputation.

The gossip from outsiders, the resentment from other fox beastkin-it hit her like a wrecking ball. Even when she seemed to get back on her feet, the whispers never let her go.

And the worst part was, she didn’t have to go through any of it.

Layla hesitated. Hanna stayed quiet.
