Chapter 72 Back for Another Trade
ÌMine’s the same. Not as pretty as Hanna, doesn’t bring in money, stays home all day, and still complains about being tired all the time, throws tantrums. I don’t get it-laundry, cooking, watching the kids. How exhausting can it really be?]
[Don’t pay attention to those females. They just can’t stand seeing a male take it easy. Layla goes out hunting and hauling water herself, doesn’t she? Funny how nobody’s dragging Shane. Oh, right-it’s because he’s loaded. Females these days are all gold diggers. Caleb doesn’t have money, so they look down on him.]
[Are you for real? Is this about money? Prof. Slater may not hunt or haul water, but he’s not sitting on his ass either. What does Caleb do? He’s dead broke and still acts like king of the castle.]
[Layla hauls water because she’s strong enough to handle it. Open your eyes and look at Hanna-her clothes are soaked through with sweat! She can’t do this. This kind of work should be Caleb’s job. If he won’t even do that, I genuinely don’t understand why she keeps him around.]
[Gotta say though-fox beastkin are built differently. No wonder she’s a celebrity. Look at that figure. Screenshotting!]
Layla glanced at Hanna’s sweat-soaked clothes and frowned. “You’re completely drenched.”
“It’s fine.” Hanna managed a weak smile. “Almost there.”
“Yeah. Almost there.” Layla pressed her lips together, then finally couldn’t hold back. “You and Caleb-are you two close?”
At the mention of Caleb, Hanna’s expression flickered with something like nervousness, but she quickly relaxed.
Layla couldn’t quite read all the complicated emotions on Hanna’s face, but she thought she saw guilt, self- reproach, and maybe a desperate need to make amends.
“He’s been so good to me,” Hanna said firmly. “I shouldn’t have snapped at you yesterday. But he didn’t get to go to school because of me. I can’t stand by and let anyone use that against him.”
Layla didn’t really get it, but she nodded anyway. “Take a breather before you head back. I’m going ahead.”
Hanna was clearly exhausted. Her shoulders sagged as she carried the buckets, her back bent.
She looked utterly drained.
Hanna didn’t say anything more. She didn’t have the energy left-not even for words.
Layla didn’t wait for her. The moment Hanna said Caleb had been so good to her, Layla knew she wasn’t going to change her mind today.
So why play the villain?
[I genuinely don’t see how Caleb has been good to her.]
[Did you not hear Hanna herself? Caleb didn’t get to go to school because of her. That’s a huge debt!]

Chapter 72 Back for Another Trade
[You don’t even know what actually happened, and you’re already talking about debts. That’s rich.)
[Hanna said it herself. What, you think she’s lying? You females just don’t want to admit what males sacrifice i for you, so you can feel good about demanding money from them, don’t you?]
[Wait-exactly how much money do you even have to be running your mouth like that? I just think Caleb isj a bad guy. Is that not allowed?]
Caleb was a bad guy.
Layla had known that for a while. What she hadn’t expected was that Caleb had gotten the same idea about making salt himself.
Once he found out that salt could be extracted from seawater, he started thinking-why not make his owry and sell it? If he priced it just a little lower than Layla’s, people would come crawling to him instead, wouldn’t they?
With that plan in mind, he’d kicked Hanna out at dawn to haul seawater.
She’d already made two trips this morning alone.
Just as Layla reached her gate with her own seawater, she spotted George standing there, two buckets of water at his feet.
“What took you so long!” George’s temper flared the second he saw Layla.
He’d come all the way to apologize, and that thick-headed Shane wouldn’t even let him through the gate. Threatened to bite him, no less!
Layla’s expression soured at the sight of George, but the guy had brought water. She pressed her lips together. “Back for another trade?”
“Like I’d be as flaky as you?” George lifted his chin, hiding the flicker of guilt in his eyes.
[Such a tsundere. Prof. Slater should be the one to deal with him.]
“Bring it in.” Layla pushed the gate open and walked in first.
George followed, but not before shooting Shane a dirty look.
The jerky was already done. Half of it sat on the table. The other half was gone-and so was Yates.
He must have gone to deliver Liam’s order.
“Put them there.” Layla gestured vaguely.
