Chapter 73 The Cohabitation Agreement
Layla grabbed some jerky off the table, stuffed it into the bag George had handed her, and tossed it back to him. “Deal done.”
George felt like she was pushing him away.
He said, “I’m tired. Gonna sit for a while.”
Shane thought he had some nerve.
Before Layla could say anything, George cut her off, “Prof. Slater wouldn’t let me in the yard. I’ve been standing outside forever. My legs are dead.”
Layla didn’t have the heart to chase him out. She stopped paying him any attention and went back to pu the finishing touches on Shane’s treehouse.
Shane looked up at Layla working up in the tree. Watching her bustle around for him warmed something in his chest.
But then he remembered-once the treehouse was done, he wouldn’t be sleeping in Layla’s little cabin anymore. The thought made his heart sink.
George had been watching for two days now as Shane fiddled with his clay, but he still couldn’t figure out what he was making.
His curiosity got the better of him. He grabbed a little stool and sat down next to Shane. “What are you making?”
Shane ignored him.
George asked, “You really planning to stay here?”
Still nothing from Shane.
George was getting annoyed. “I’m talking to you.”
“I’m not stopping you,” Shane said.
“Well, you could at least answer me!”
“Not answering is an answer, isn’t it?” Shane shot him an icy glare, clearly annoyed by how oblivious he was.
George pursed his lips. So nobody here actually wanted him around.
He stood up and headed for the gate, huffing, “Like I even wanted to come!”
He’d shown up and gotten locked out.
Now he was leaving, and nobody cared whether he stayed or went. Talk about a low point.
Feeling thoroughly humiliated, George walked even faster.

Chapter 73 The Cohabitation Agreement
Shane glanced up at Layla, still hard at work, sighed, and went back to shaping his clay.
From up above, Layla thought she heard Shane sigh.
She paused for a moment while installing the window, then acted like she hadn’t heard anything and kept working.
Once the window was in, the job was finished.
Layla jumped down from the tree, and Shane said, “It’s getting cold. Yates can’t keep sleeping in the stone/ cave forever.”
[Did I hear that right? Prof. Slater is actually worried about Yates?]
[Yates! You hear that? You’ve made it!]
[I feel like something’s off here. Don’t forget who we’re talking about-this is Prof. Slater.]
Layla was quiet for a moment, then nodded. “You’re right.”
She’d already decided to let Yates stay. She couldn’t let him suffer.
“I’ll build him a treehouse later.”
Shane shook his head. “Give him this one instead.”
Layla’s breath caught.
So it finally comes to this. Damn plot.
“Okay. When are you leaving?”
Shane’s eyes went wide as he stared at her in disbelief. “You want me to leave?”
Layla pressed her lips together. What kind of question was that?
If Shane wanted to go, was she supposed to chain him down?
The plot really couldn’t be changed.
“What else am I supposed to do? Beg you to stay?”
If a person wanted to leave, she wasn’t going to grovel. She couldn’t do that.
Even if she’d realized her feelings for Shane were different now, she still couldn’t throw herself at him like the original owner would have.
“George was right!” Shane’s eyes were blazing. He stood up in a huff-but instead of leaving, he stormed into the stone cave.
Layla was confused.
What did George say?

Wait-did George badmouth her to Shane? Was that why he suddenly wanted to leave?
That damn George!
Back at the beach, George was waistdeep in the water when he sneezed. He rubbed his nose. “Definitely getting cold. I need to find somewhere to crash. Can’t keep living like this.”
