Chapter 79 The Director’s Take

But Yates just nodded obediently. “Okay.”

“I thought you didn’t want to see Liam?” Layla was cooking soup and glanced back at him.

The guy who’d been jealous just a couple of days ago was suddenly inviting Liam over. Something felt off.

Shane said, “I still don’t.

“But I’m hurt. I can’t help with the work for a few days. Yates is the only one left, and you want him running deliveries.”

The two cabins weren’t that far apart, but they weren’t exactly close either. A round trip would take Yates at least half an hour, maybe more.

And sometimes when he got there, no one would be home, and he’d have to wait.

Layla nodded, seeing his point. “That’s actually pretty thoughtful of you.”

If this were Liam, he’d probably crack a joke. “When am I not thoughtful?”

But this was Shane. A faint blush crept across his cheeks. “I, uh… try.”

Layla laughed.

He really was kind of adorable.

“I’ll put extra meat in yours.”

[There it is again! I’m shipping them so hard!]

[If this isn’t love, I don’t know what is.]

[He doesn’t even like Liam, but he’s willing to have Liam come over just so Layla doesn’t have to work so hard. Prof. Slater, you are the god of pure love!]

[But… Layla doesn’t like him back, remember?]

[Shut up! This is all Stella’s fault! Argh! I’m losing my mind! And Stella’s fans are still running their mouths on Ins. If I could actually win a fight against them, I swear! Ahhh!]

Yes, the war on Ins was raging, and Layla’s Stars were losing.

Stella had been a child star. She’d spent her whole life building a massive fanbase-battlehardened veterans, every single one of them.

On top of that, the Grant family head, Layla’s biological mother, Ciara Grant, had bought Stella a ton of bots.

The Stars had held out for a while. They were outmatched, but at least they hadn’t completely crumbled.

Then the bots arrived. Professional, coordinated, relentless. Layla’s fans didn’t stand a chance.

Not that anyone could blame them. Layla’s fans were mostly stragglers.

Yates’ fans had jumped in to help too. They didn’t last a single round. Stella’s fans spent the whole day calling him “clout chaser,” and they still hadn’t let up.

Back at the production camp, Michael walked over with a tablet. “The situation on Ins right now-Stella’s dominating. But if you look at the live streams, Layla’s numbers are already matching Stella’s. Ms. Myers, are we really just going to let them keep this up? Something’s going to blow up if this continues.”

“Let them fight. Michael, you’ve been in this business for years. How do you still not get it? The bigger the storm, the bigger the catch.”

Michael hesitated, glancing at Fiona. Fiona’s eye twitched. “Let me guess-this involves Prof. Slater again?”

“Not this time, actually. But… Prof. Slater likes Layla, doesn’t he?”

Michael didn’t understand why Fiona seemed so invested in Shane. Last time something involved him, Fiona didn’t sleep for days.

But given how much Fiona cared about Shane, shouldn’t he care about the people Shane cared about too? Layla was getting torn apart by Stella’s fans-they’d even started editing funeral portraits of her. If Shane got angry about it later, could Fiona handle his wrath?

Fiona patted Michael on the shoulder. “You still don’t really understand males.”

“What’s that supposed to mean? Are you revoking my male card?”

“Aren’t you into guys?” Fiona said, completely deadpan.

Michael’s face turned red. He clamped a hand over Fiona’s mouth. “Keep your voice down! It’s not like it’s something to be proud of.”

Fiona pulled his hand down. “Like who you like. It’s not hurting anyone. What’s there not to be proud of?”

Michael hadn’t expected Fiona-usually so focused on profit-to say something like that.

He was impressed despite himself.

“So what do you mean? I don’t understand males?”

“Males are incredibly jealous. Don’t let Prof. Slater’s gentle, gracious act fool you into thinking he’s totally fine with her rejection. That’s just for the cameras. Deep down, he probably wants to tear her apart.”

Michael tilted his head, confused.

“You’re still young. If a female… sorry, if a guy you liked turned you down, what would you do?”

“Turn me down? So what? It’s not like he was leading me on.”

Fiona choked on that answer and had to take a sip of water before he could recover. “That’s your gay guy brain talking. Males don’t think like that.”

“How do they think?”
