Chapter 81 The Treehouse Dilemma
Even as a general, he could not brave beast dens daily and remain entirely uninjured.
He was starting to suspect the higherups didn’t actually want the Starcore Ore deposit-they wanted him dead so they could reclaim his honors.
“With just the two of us on foot, we’ll be searching until next year and still won’t have covered the whole planet, will we?”.
“You have a better idea?” Shane looked up from his map at Liam.
Liam had nothing to say.
He considered himself reasonably articulate, but his brain wasn’t exactly the sharpest tool in the shed. He was a martial brute. Without any information, what was he supposed to come up with?
“Command says I take orders from you.”
“Then go search,” Shane said, putting the matter to rest.
Liam sighed, “Fine. I’ll go search. Happy?”
No sooner had the words left his mouth than Liam’s expression sharpened. “Someone’s…”
Before he could finish, Yates’ head poked through the cave entrance. He looked at Shane. “Prof. Slater, I need to grab a jar.”
Shane grunted, “Come in and get it.”
Yates carried in a jar full of fresh water, stacked it in the cave, and took out an empty one.
“So… you really planning to stay here with Layla longterm?” Liam asked once Yates was gone. “Prince Oliver asked about you the other day. Wondering why you haven’t come over yet.”
“I’m not going. You’re staying here.”
“Wait, you really have feelings for Layla?” Liam had glanced at Shane’s stream a few times lately and seen viewers complaining that his attempts to win her over were hopeless.
Shane glanced at Layla, fetched the soup she made for him, and came back into the cave. Seated across from Liam, he ate at a deliberate pace. “She’s wonderful.”
Liam asked, “Layla?”
Shane nodded emphatically. “That’s right. This is the soup Layla made for me.”
Liam didn’t ask about the soup.
Seeing that smug look plastered across Shane’s face made something in Liam’s chest twist with irritation.
“So you’re getting a new one in your yard? I saw Layla building another treehouse.”

And just like that, Shane’s good mood evaporated.
“It’s for me,” Shane said.
“What?” Liam’s eyes went wide. He looked at Shane with pure sympathy. “She’s kicking you out? And you still like her after that?”
Until recently, Layla’s yard had only had one treehouse. Anyone who wasn’t watching the stream obsessively, whether Liam, George, or even Stella, had assumed Shane was sharing it with Layla.
Then Layla built a second treehouse. But by then, Yates had appeared in her yard, so everyone naturally assumed that one was for Yates.
The truth was slightly different from the assumption, but not by much. That treehouse was now Yates.
“What do you know?” Shane shot Liam a dirty look. “I sleep in Layla’s room right now. Have you slept in Stella’s room?”
Liam was momentarily speechless.
Seriously, who was it that said Shane was this cool, aloof, ascetic professor? The man was petty as hell. He wouldn’t let anyone get away with a single word.
“Still here? Aren’t you worried your Stella will come looking for you?”
Shane knew very well that Layla didn’t like Stella.
He didn’t like her much either.
Layla didn’t like anyone connected to Stella.
And he didn’t like anyone connected to Stella either.
Except… he was connected to Stella too. And Layla didn’t like him.
After Liam left, Shane couldn’t help spiraling into self-pity.
Yates had gone out to forage for wild greens to dry. He washed them and laid them out on bamboo mats to dry in the sun. As he worked, he heard Shane sitting off to the side, drawing and sighing.
“Prof. Slater, is that a mech design?” Yates turned his head curiously.
Shane heard him, but didn’t feel like answering.
Then for some reason, he shook his head. “Topographic map of the area. Makes it easier for you when you go out to dig up wild greens.”
Yates hadn’t expected Shane to be thinking of him at all. His eyes lit up.
“I’ll be fine. I’m careful.”
“It matters,” Shane said. “I’ll have Liam clear out the predators around here for you. And from now on, don’t drag Layla along when you go out.”
