Chapter 82 The Salt Scheme
Layla had no idea about the turmoil in Shane’s heart. She bounced over to him cheerfully. “Hey, princess, want me to add some flowering vines to your treehouse? You know, for decoration?”
She wasn’t asking out of nowhere. The past few days, every time Layla announced the treehouse was ready for move-in, Shane had come up with another request to delay the handover.
Make it prettier. Make it cozier. Better lighting.
Every time Layla thought it was good enough, he’d find something new to ask for.
Layla had been unusually free lately anyway. Most of her preparations were nearly done. All she needed now was to stockpile some firewood for the winter and reinforce the insulation inside and out. Barring any surprises, she’d be able to ride out the cold season in peace.
But, as it turned out, surprises came sooner than expected.
Not that it was a big deal.
Just… irritating.
[I genuinely don’t understand what Stella is trying to do anymore.]
[Join the club. I used to be a Stella fan. I can’t understand why she keeps self-sabotaging. She had a perfect hand and wasted it completely. Why even join this show? Is she trying to lose fans on purpose?]
[You know what? I’m starting to actually believe Stella really does want to give the five mates back to Layla.]
Stella knocked on Layla’s gate.
Yes, this time she knocked.
Layla’s frown deepened at the sight of Stella. And when she saw Caleb trailing behind her, her frown got even deeper.
“You two are already sneaking around together this early?”
The moment the words left Layla’s mouth, the person whose expression darkened shifted.
Stella’s face went pale, then flushed red as her eyes welled up. “How could you think that of me?”
[So she just makes up lies on the spot now?]
[I told you all from the beginning-Layla is trash. But you idiots kept trying to whitewash her. Go on, keep defending her! Let’s see what else you come up with?]
[Even if they aren’t sneaking around, their little scheme is still despicable. If they’re so worried about gossip, they shouldn’t have teamed up with Caleb in the first place. She’s openly conspiring with him against Layla. Getting called out is the bare minimum she deserves.]
[Conspiring? That’s such an ugly word! Stella just can’t stand how Layla is obsessed with profit!]

Chapter 82 The Salt Scheme
[So what if she’s obsessed with profit? You don’t work for money? Your precious Stella doesn’t work for money? If she’s so pure, why doesn’t she just walk away from the Grant family? She keeps saying she wants to give everything back to Layla, but she’s still camped out in the Grant Manor like she owns the place. Talk about wanting to have your cake and eat it too. Pathetic.]
[If Stella weren’t in it for the profit, why would she be here bothering Layla right now? She wants something for nothing. You think freeloading is righteous, but Layla-who actually wants to earn a living is the villain? That makes no sense.]
Layla caught herself too.
Calling it “sneaking around” between Stella and Caleb was a stretch.
Not because Caleb wasn’t interested-but because Stella would never lower her standards for someone like him.
But when Caleb heard Layla’s words, his head snapped toward Stella.
He suddenly remembered this morning. Stella had come to find him.
He’d been trying to extract salt from seawater.
He didn’t have the tools Layla had, but he could more or less figure out the process.
He evaporated the seawater and got crystals. But every time he tried, the taste was wrong.
He thought maybe the seawater Hanna brought was the problem, so he’d gone and fetched it himself— twice. Still wrong. Bitter, salty, foul-completely inedible.
He’d wondered if all salt from seawater tasted like that. But he’d heard from Liam that the fine salt Layla produced was no different from the one in a store.
Which meant he’d failed.
He’d been throwing a tantrum in the cabin when Stella showed up out of nowhere. She’d comforted him patiently and offered to come with him to see Layla.
They were all here to survive, she said. They should work together, not act like Layla-selfishly hoarding her ability to make salt and refusing to share with anyone else.
After hearing her out, Caleb thought she had a point.
Yeah. They were all on the same show, all trying to survive. Why was Layla being so uncooperative?
They should be teaming up against the production crew, against this dangerous, unknown planet-not building monopolies.
But… why had Stella come to comfort him?
How did Stella know he was trying to make salt?
Why had she offered to come with him to see Layla?
