Chapter 84 The Orphanage Dig
Galeb’s face lit up. “Now you’re talking sense.”
“But,” Layla said, “you also said the salt should be shared with everyone. That means everyone has to come. I can’t just give it to you and Stella and leave everyone else out. What happens when they come knocking later? I’d have some explaining to do, don’t you think?”
Layla had never crossed paths with someone like Caleb in real life, but she’d run into his kind all over the internet.
All talk, no talent-but boy, did he love acting like he knew better than everyone else.
The sort of guy who’d flash his male privilege and a couple of half-baked survival tips, then strut around lecturing and tearing down any female younger than him.
The best way to handle someone like that wasn’t to argue that he was wrong. It was to agree with him. Stroke his ego. Let him inflate until he floated away.
Layla’s show of weakness now was feeding Caleb’s ego exactly what it craved.
He gave a condescending nod. “That’s a fair point.”
“See!” Layla put on a troubled face. “I’d love to gather everyone together, but right now I don’t even know where some of them are. No way to get everyone here at once.”
Caleb puffed out his chest. “Leave that to me. Tomorrow afternoon, I’ll bring everyone here. You just have the salt ready.”
“I’ll be waiting,” Layla smiled and nodded, seeing them to the gate.
Stella looked at Layla with an expression of pained concern. “Layla, don’t be angry with me. I just worry that if you don’t cooperate with everyone now, when something happens later, no one will be there to help you.”
Layla let out a cold laugh. “Well, aren’t you thoughtful. But I have to wonder what exactly is going to happen on a reality show? And even if something does happen, can’t I just call the production crew?”
[Exactly! I told you Stella was fake. You didn’t believe me. Do you believe me now?]
[She can dress it up all she wants, but it’d be more honest to just admit she wants Layla’s salt. I’d respect her more if she just owned it.]
[This is how fakes operate. They never ask for what they want directly. They just drop hints and let other people connect the dots. Then when things go sideways, they wash their hands of it. My ex-husband’s other woman was exactly like this.]
[You’ve got stories.]
[Stories? She’s got skills. You managed to make him your ex-husband instead of ending up as a smear on the wall. That’s impressive.]
Layla had just seen them out when she ran straight into Hanna coming the other way.

Chapter 84 The Orphanage Dig
Hanna grabbed Caleb’s arm the moment she reached him. “What are you doing here?”
Her tent was close to Talia’s wooden cabin. She’d come back from hunting and found Caleb gone. Sebastian had told her he was heading to Layla’s place-he’d been delivering wild greens.
Caleb and Layla had already clashed before. It had gotten ugly. Hanna had even lost her temper at Layla over him. She’d apologized since, but she still felt guilty around Layla.
And she knew Caleb had been trying to figure out how to make salt.
She had tried to stop him. But once Caleb set his mind on something, he never backed down, no matter what. He wouldn’t listen to sense. What they were doing-trying to take Layla’s secret method-made her too ashamed to even meet her gaze.
Even after days of failure, that shame hadn’t gone away.
But now Caleb had come to see Layla anyway. If she didn’t come too, who knew what trouble he’d stir up
She couldn’t hide anymore.
Her steps were unsteady with anxiety. She hadn’t expected to arrive and find Layla being perfectly polite to Caleb.
She hurried over. “Caleb, what are you doing here?”
Her tone wasn’t great. She was upset and scared.
The moment Caleb heard her voice, his expression darkened. “What’s with all the shouting? Can’t you see we have guests? Where are your manners? Learn something from Ms. Grant here.”
Stella gave Hanna a demure smile. “Ms. Morgan.”
Hanna’s eyes slowly went wide as she stared at Caleb in disbelief. “Caleb?”
She’d known Caleb for years. Sure, he could be a handful sometimes, but he’d never spoken to her like this before.
Hadn’t Caleb always said she was the best?
Now he was saying she had no manners?
“What, you think I’m wrong?” Caleb’s eyes bulged. “Look at yourself. Bumbling in here, yelling like a fishwife. No wonder your parents abandoned you.”
[Oh my god. This guy is way out of line.]
