Chapter 85 The Confrontation

Layla could clearly see the raw hurt in Hanna’s eyes-the disbelief, the pain. But Caleb acted like he hadn’t noticed at all. If anything, he looked even more smug.

He turned to Stella and put on a humble act. “Sorry you had to see that. Hanna’s never had much polish. Grew up in an orphanage, and no one taught her proper manners. Not like you-born into a fine family. raised as a proper lady.”

Stella just gave a serene smile. “You’re too kind, Cal. I’m just lucky to have been born into a good family with strict parents. But Ms. Morgan is very genuine and adorable in her own way.”

[Oh my god. I said she was fake. If anyone ever defends her again, I’ll throw hands.]

[Genuine and adorable? That’s just a nice way of saying she’s rude. Don’t think we can’t read between, the lines.]

[Wow, some of you are so sensitive. “Genuine and adorable” is a compliment, isn’t it?]

[“Genuine and adorable” can be a compliment-but not in this context. Stop making excuses. Argue with me if you want, but I’m right.]

“You’re far too modest, Ms. Grant. Hanna has no family. She isn’t worthy of even a fraction of you.”

“Caleb…” Tears welled in Hanna’s eyes, spilling over in heavy drops. Her body swayed, unsteady.

Layla quickly stepped forward and caught her arm. “Are you okay?”

Tears streaming down her face, Hanna stared stubbornly at Caleb. “Is that really how you see me?”

[What is wrong with Caleb? Does he get off on tearing down his own mate?]

[Gotta say-there are a lot of guys like that out there.]

[I’ve got one at home. Can’t even criticize him, or he throws a tantrum. Doesn’t earn a cent but thinks he’s God’s gift to women. Meanwhile, he can’t even perform in bed.]

Hanna’s crying only made Caleb feel more humiliated in front of Stella. He stormed over, grabbed her wrist, and yanked. “That’s enough. Stop crying. Just as I thought-small and petty.”

He dragged her away, grumbling the whole time. “Petty thing, No sense of occasion. Can’t you see your man is handling important business? You come here making a scene. Just wait till we get home.”

He’d dragged her a good distance when he turned back and yelled at Layla, “You wait. Tomorrow I’m bringing everyone here.”

Then he flashed Stella a smile. “Sorry you had to see that.”

Stella remained serene, as if none of it had anything to do with her.

Layla snorted and turned to go back inside.

“Layla.” Stella’s voice stopped her.

Chapter 85 The Confrontation

Layla paused but didn’t turn around.

Stella walked around to face her. Her lips held a smile, but the challenge in her eyes was unmistakable.

“How have you and Prof. Slater been getting along?”

“Pretty well, actually.” Layla could see the provocation clear as day. “Why do you ask? Hoping Il send him back to you? If you can get him to come back, I certainly wouldn’t object.”

Stella’s expression flickered. She hadn’t been watching Layla’s stream constantly, but in her cabin, she was the only one who didn’t do any real work.

She spent her hours glued to her own stream, chatting with her fans.

Call it “monitoring public opinion” and “getting first-hand intelligence.”

But most of the intelligence her fans passed along? About Layla and Shane.

Even now, many of Stella’s old fans still lurked in Layla’s live chat, passing her updates so Stella always knew exactly what Layla was doing.

So Stella had known for a while that Shane had confessed to Layla.

“I’ve been meaning to come congratulate you. Just never found the right moment until today.”

“Whether it’s the right moment or you came on purpose-you know the answer to that.” Layla’s voice went cold. “Since you and your fans are so invested in me, you must also know that I turned him down.”

At that, Stella’s smile faltered for just a second.

She’d even gone out of her way to learn about mech design just so she could have something to talk about with Shane.

They’d been so close to getting engaged. And then Layla showed up.

Shane’s family had put the engagement on hold.

She understood why. But that didn’t stop the resentment from festering.

What was so important about blood?

She was better than Layla in every way. Breeding, status, fame, connections-Layla couldn’t hold a candle to

her.
