Chapter 88 Backfire
At just the right moment, Layla turned the screen toward Stella. “Take a look at what people are saying. Do you think they’re right?”

Stella looked up and was met with a live chat comment calling her a hypocrite who wanted to have her cake and eat it too.
She immediately lost her composure.
For the sake of her reputation, she hadn’t been paying much attention to other people’s streams. She focused on her own.
And her stream was mostly her fans. Other people’s fans didn’t make a habit of lurking elsewhere.
Most of her fans idolized her completely. No matter what she did, even her questionable choices, they always made excuses for her. Nobody dared speak ill of her in her chat. Anyone who didn’t shower her with enough praise would get mobbed immediately.
She’d long since gotten used to being the center of the universe.
She’d never stopped to consider what people were saying about her outside. What her reputation had really
become.
The live chat was scrolling like crazy. Being able to call her out to her face seemed to be giving a lot of people a much-needed outlet.
[She wants it all-the inheritance, the good reputation, the males.]
[I genuinely feel sorry for Layla. Switched at birth with this one.]
[Thank god Layla wasn’t raised by that family. Look how this one turned out. No moral compass. Makes you wonder-is Ciara just as twisted?]
[Do you even have to ask? It’s fine to be good to your adopted daughter-you raised her, after all. But Layla is her biological daughter. Giving everything to the adopted kid and ignoring the fact that her real daughter suffered for over twenty years-is that what a normal person does?]
[Like mother, like daughter.]
Comment after comment poured in, not just tearing into Stella, but dragging Ciara down with her.
Not that Stella actually cared whether Ciara got insulted or not. She was only feeling sorry for herself.
“That’s not true. I did try to persuade them. On the very first day, I told them to come find you. They just didn’t want to.”
“I never said it was your fault, Stella. It’s those males forcing your hand, isn’t it?” Layla’s eyes and brows were soft with gentle smiles.
Stella nodded instinctively and then immediately realized her mistake.
Layla was leading her into badmouthing those males.

Chapter 88 Backfire
A huge chunk of Stella’s fanbase was ship fans.
They’d started following her because she’d landed five powerful mates.
She’d always secretly preened at that kind of adoration.
But what Layla was saying today-she was laying all of Stella’s hidden thoughts bare, airing them out in front of the camera.
“In that case, Stella, I suggest you report it to the police.”
The police force here was essentially the same as back on Earth.
“The chief constable will stand up for you. Need me to help you make the call?”
Layla looked for all the world like she was just trying to help.
Stella raised her head stiffly and met Layla’s concerned gaze.
She shook her head. But Layla had boxed her in, so she had to keep playing along. “No need. They didn’t…”
“Why not? You’re just too kind. Those males are taking advantage of your kindness, assuming you won’t make a fuss. That’s not something you should tolerate.”
“No, that’s not it. They’re not forcing me to do anything!” Stella finally snapped back to her senses.
“They’re not?” Layla asked. “But just, now, Stella, you clearly…”
“No!” Stella’s eyes were red as she stared at Layla. “I know you’re angry with me because I kept saying I’d give them back to you but never actually kicked them out.”
“I’m not angry. I don’t really care where they are. We just got to talking, that’s all. You’re the one who told me to kick out Prof. Slater.”
At that, Layla smiled suddenly, as if a thought had just occurred to her. “But speaking of which… if Prof. Slater leaves my place, where do you think he’ll go?”
Stella took it for granted that he’d come to her.
And when he did, she’d put on a brave, wronged face and graciously forgive him.
Shane was so naive and oblivious when it came to feelings. He’d definitely think she’d been through so much.
Guilt alone would keep him from ever leaving her again.
Even though the Slaters looked down on her for not being a pure Grant heiress, they’d have no choice but
to take her in.
That was what she thought. But she didn’t dare say it out loud.
