Chapter 89 The Professor’s Stand
The live chat kept scrolling. And as the comments rolled in, Stella slowly regained her composure.
Her fans were still behind her.
She’d lost her head for a moment-flustered by Layla’s pressure.
So what if a few people were cursing her out? Those were Layla’s fans. Of course they’d attack her. She and Layla weren’t exactly friends.
Now that she was looking at her own stream’s chat, seeing that her fans still supported her, she finally pulled herself together.
Her fans were still on her side.
She didn’t need to pay attention to whatever Layla tried to show her.
“Prof. Slater is free to make his own choices. He has the right to go wherever he wants.”
Layla smiled, “Well, you’re clearly welleducated. You see things differently than I do. That makes me curious -if Prof. Slater chose to go to your place, would you take him in?”
“I…” Stella’s words caught in her throat.
But the live chat was already providing the answer.
[Of course take him! Why wouldn’t you? It would mean his heart is still with Stella!]
[I agree. If he comes to you, that means he loves you. He just got distracted for a little while. But deep down, you’re still the one he loves most.]
“I would probably…
“No, I wouldn’t.”
Stella didn’t get to finish. A voice cut her off-sharp and final.
Shane’s face was dark. His eyes had turned into pale green vertical slits, radiating a cold, menacing light.
Layla had never seen him like this. She froze for a moment, caught off guard.
Stella clearly hadn’t seen this side of him either. The Shane she remembered was cold and quiet, yes-but always gentle and polite in his dealings with others. He’d never shown this expression in front of anyone.
[Oh my god. Prof. Slater’s really furious.]
[Furious? He’s about to explode!]
[I’ve seen him lose his temper once, believe it or not. Our class had a 60% fail rate. He stood at the podium without saying a word. Just stared at us.]
[I can imagine. I feel for you. Even Crownpeak University students are scared of their teachers.]

“Prof. Slater, you’re back. Layla and I were just…”
“Not another word,” Shane cut Stella off with a wave of his hand, his eyes locked on Layla.
“What did you just say?”
Layla squirmed under his stare, feeling oddly guilty.
“I was just speaking hypothetically.”
“You make me the hypothetical? Why not use Yates?”
Layla said, “That’s apples and oranges.”
“Then what is the same?” Shane’s eyes grew even darker. The strain in his voice was unmistakable. “You’re trying to kick me out, aren’t you?
“You never really wanted me here in the first place, did you?
“At first, it was just me, and you thought I was a burden. Now you have Yates-he can do your work for you. He’s obedient, considerate, and sweet. And now you like him, don’t you?”
“I do not.” Layla’s voice wavered. She didn’t know why, but hearing him lump her together with Yates made something twist in her chest.
“You don’t what?” Shane stepped closer, using his height to tower over her. “You don’t want to kick me out? Or you don’t have feelings for Yates?”
“Neither,” Layla said. “Stella told me the rule-a cabin can only keep males you’re willing to keep dating. I already turned you down. By the rules, I can’t keep you here.”
Layla hadn’t meant to throw Stella under the bus. But Shane’s head whipped toward Stella anyway.
“Show rule?”
Stella’s hair stood on end under his stare. But remembering how gentle he’d always been with her before, she mustered her courage and nodded. “That’s right.”
Shane had been on shows before.
They’d met on one-a science program about mech design.
Back then, Shane had been more cooperative with the production crew’s requests than even many ‘celebrities.
So Stella had naturally assumed he was willing to follow the show’s rules.
“The show really does require that. I didn’t realize Layla didn’t know.”
“But I do know,” Shane said.
Stella froze. “What?”
