Chapter 96 Sharing the Bed
“Prof. Slater, are you drawing plans? Is that some kind of amazing mech?” Yates stared at the blueprint with curiosity. “You’re so impressive. I can’t make heads or tails of it.”
[Of course you can’t. Unless you’d watched them hash it out together, who would guess he’s designing a heated sleeping platform?]
[Probably something from Planet Frontier. We don’t have stuff like that around here.]
[Give it a rest with the planet shaming. Lots of cold places use heated platforms. Don’t embarrass yourself showing off how little you know.]
“It’s not a mech. You’ll see when it’s built.”
“Oh.” Yates sounded a little disappointed. “I thought you were designing another amazing mech.”
To the public, Shane was nothing but a man obsessed with mech design. No wonder Yates misunderstood him.
Layla didn’t bother explaining for him. “Don’t stay up too late tonight. Get some rest. We’ve got things to do
tomorrow.”
“Okay.” Yates nodded and carried his jars out of the cave.
By the time he finished distilling one bucket of seawater, Layla and Shane came out of the cave.
Looking at the remaining bucket, Layla shook her head. “Leave it. Get some sleep.”
“Okay, I’ll just clean up and then head to bed.” Yates cheerfully got to work, tidying up quickly. “You two should get some rest too.”
Shane didn’t go to his treehouse. He followed Layla into hers, walked over to the spot where he’d been sleeping all along, and tossed the furs onto the floor.
He was about to spread them out when he heard Layla’s voice behind him. “Don’t bother. The floor is cold. Come sleep up here.”
Shane’s back was to her. His eyes lit up.
[Whoa. That glow nearly blinded me.]
[There he goes again, living the good life. Honestly, out of everyone on Primal Hearts, no male or female has it better than Prof. Slater. I keep thinking-if he steps down, let me take his spot.]
[Same here. Everyone else is just trying to survive. He’s here having a romance. Can’t fend for himself? No problem-he ran into Layla. Two confessions, and she said yes. I’m past jealousy at this point.]
“This… isn’t really appropriate. You’re a female, and we…”
He wasn’t faking it. This was still a show. Shane might not be from the entertainment industry, but he’d learned a thing or two from watching the live chat.

Chapter 96 Sharing the Bed
Layla was getting torn apart by Stella’s fans. Every little thing she did got twisted and blown out of proportion.
He used to think Stella was sweet and innocent. He had no idea where his eyes had been back then.
He figured it was because he’d never been this close to her before. King Cobras didn’t have the best long- distance vision. Not being able to see Stella clearly from far away was a decent enough excuse.
Layla couldn’t see his face-he was sitting on the floor with his back to her, his back straight. But just hearing his words warmed her a little.
“I don’t care about any of that,” Layla said. “And I’m not the type to back down once I’ve agreed to be with
someone.”
Though their time together was short, they were kindred spirits from the very first moment.
She’d made her choice. She wasn’t going to change her mind.
“Okay.” Shane dragged his furs onto the bed.
It wasn’t really a bed so much as a raised platform about sixteen inches high, made of wooden planks and covered with thick layers of animal hides.
Quite a few animals had given their hides for that bedding. Layla had sewn them all together herself. Some she’d hunted. Most came from the animals Liam had brought her.
Layla lay on the inside. Shane lay down beside her. There was nearly an arm’s length between them.
In the darkness, someone’s heartbeat grew faster and faster.
“Your heartbeat is too loud,” Layla said.
Shane said, “Oh. Sorry.” He pressed a hand to his chest and took deep breaths, trying to calm himself down.
But the heartbeat kept going.
“It’s not mine.”
Layla turned her head. In the dark, Shane’s eyes were unnaturally bright, with a hint of something she couldn’t quite read-something like quiet satisfaction.
[If it’s not his, it’s Layla’s. Look at her, all stern and proper, and she’s nervous too.]
[Wouldn’t you be nervous with the person you like lying right next to you?]
