The morning air was remarkably fresh.
Holding her resignation letter, Sienna stood in the elevator, watching the floor numbers tick upward, her heart beating a little faster than usual.
Five years of her youth, over a thousand days and nights—today, she was finally bringing it all to an end.
Luna's call came through.
Sienna stepped out of the elevator and answered, "What's up?"
"Sienna, how's the resignation going? Everything smooth?"
"Perfectly smooth. I'm heading to hand my resignation report to Jonathan right now. Once the paperwork is done, I'm flying out tonight."
She had already booked tonight's ticket, and everything in Germany was more or less arranged. She was just waiting on this final step.
Hearing this, Luna's tone instantly dipped into reluctance. "That's such a shame. I'm on the night shift tonight, so I can't even see you off.
Make sure you take good care of yourself over there. Eat on time, don't get too caught up in work and forget to rest.
Fly back and visit me when you have time, and the second I get some time off, I'll fly straight to Germany to see you."
"I will, I'll keep all of that in mind," Sienna replied with a smile, a warm feeling blooming in her chest.
Still worried, Luna continued to ramble, "Are you absolutely sure about your job in Germany?
When you rent a place, make sure it's in a safe neighborhood. Don't cheap out—safety is the most important thing. You being all alone in a foreign country really has my stomach tied in knots."
Sienna laughed helplessly. "I'm just moving to a different city, it's not like I'm dying. Stop being so dramatic, you're making me not want to leave."
Luna sniffled. "It hasn't been easy for you getting to this point, and now with Owen in his current condition, you're carrying so much weight on your own.
I... If I didn't have my own family to take care of, I really would pack up and go with you."
"Stop being silly." Sienna's eyes grew slightly hot. "You have your own life. I'll come back whenever I have time, and we can call each other whenever we want."
"You better remember that," Luna said, choking up.
"I will."
Hanging up the phone, Sienna found herself standing right outside Jonathan's office door.
"What?"
Sienna's mind went blank, freezing her completely in place.
Of course she remembered that project.
When she first entered the medical field, she had watched far too many young people driven to the brink by psychological struggles, watching countless families tear apart.
Heartbroken by the reality, she and her mentor had petitioned to create the initiative.
Underage students, overwhelmed rookies entering the workforce, young adults crushed by the immense pressure of their respective fields...
One desperate face after another flashed through her mind.
That was precisely why she had fought tooth and nail to get the project off the ground back then.
But later, the funding collapsed, and the project was forcibly shelved. For years, there had been complete radio silence.
Jonathan sighed, noting that the chances of the project resuming were slim to none, and advised her to let it go.
