“That night, I was out back tending to the garden when I stumbled upon Maloney arguing with a gentleman in a white suit,” Mrs. Higgins said.
“They were quite a distance away, so I couldn't hear what they were fighting about, but I thought I heard your name and Jarred's.”
Sienna's chest instantly tightened.
She controlled her breathing, making sure not to interrupt Mrs. Higgins.
“Maloney looked absolutely furious. I had never seen him that angry,” Mrs. Higgins recalled.
“The moment they noticed me, they stopped. The man in the white suit didn't linger; he just turned and left. Later, while I was tidying up the garden, I found a white pocket square right where he had been standing. It was neatly folded with an English initial embroidered on it.”
Sienna asked, “What was the initial?”
Mrs. Higgins frowned, thinking hard before chuckling. “I think it was an 'S'. It was quite a long name, and I don't really understand it. But the pocket square was incredibly elegant, with subtle patterns stitched into the edges. It wasn't something cheap. I figured I'd return it to Maloney, but the second he saw it, all the color drained from his face. He told me to throw it away immediately, said it wasn't his, and told me to mind my own business. Maloney must know who that gentleman is. You could probably ask him.”
Sienna gripped the edge of her shirt.
She was absolutely certain the man in the white suit Mrs. Higgins was describing was the man in the photograph.
But Maloney would never tell her.
Who else could possibly know him?
Sienna thought back to the fiancée Mrs. Higgins had mentioned...
Sienna stayed in Germany for one more day.
After consulting with Owen's medical team and arranging his follow-up rehabilitation plan, she flew back to the Capital.
The next day, she set up a meeting with Agnes Zeller.
As expected, she ran into Seraphina at the Zeller estate.
Sienna chatted with Agnes for a while.
“I recently discovered that before Jarred and I got together, there was an... incident. Maloney knows about it, but he's intentionally covering it up.”
Sienna's gaze was completely sincere. “Maloney's reaction to that event is incredibly suspicious. It's like he's protecting someone. You were the only person able to get close to him over the years. Do you have any idea who that might be?”
Seraphina let out a cold scoff.
That subtle reaction told Sienna everything she needed to know—Seraphina was far less indifferent than she appeared.
“Ms. Sloan, I'm afraid you've wasted a trip. If I knew, I wouldn't have called off the engagement in the first place,” Seraphina replied dismissively.
Sienna caught the hint of mockery in her eyes and frowned. “What exactly do you mean by that, Seraphina?”
Seraphina paused with her teacup mid-air. She looked up at Sienna, her eyes pooling with an unsettling calm.
So much time had passed; there was no point in hiding it anymore.
“Our families set us up. Everything was incredibly peaceful, and the engagement plans were moving along perfectly.”
