The moment the words left her mouth, she spun on her heel and flagged down a taxi waiting outside the hotel.
She pulled the door open and slid inside, her movements fluid and utterly resolute without looking back.
By the time Jarred processed what had happened, he was already sprinting after her.
His legs were much longer than hers, and he could have closed the distance in strides, but the cab door was already slammed shut.
"Sienna!" he shouted, his voice swallowed by the wind.
Jarred stood on the curb, his chest heaving.
He thought back to the look on her face when she told him to stop following her.
He couldn't even tell if her apathy was genuine or if she was just a master at hiding her pain.
The Maybach rolled up to the curb.
Declan Ward perceptively leaped out and opened the back door.
Jarred slid in, and the engine roared as they chased after her.
The cab wove through traffic, but he kept his eyes glued to its red taillights.
Inside the taxi, the driver glanced in the rearview mirror at the stone-faced young woman in the back seat and tentatively cleared his throat.
"Miss, was the guy chasing you driving a black Maybach?"
Sienna looked up, catching the reflection of the familiar luxury car in the mirror.
The black Maybach prowled through the evening traffic like a stalking panther, tailing the cab flawlessly.
She frowned.
"He's right on our tail," the driver noted.
Sienna's voice was frigid, leaving no room for argument. "Lose him."
The driver looked conflicted. "I mean, I can try, but this is downtown traffic... there are rules on these roads..."
Sienna didn't blink. "I'll pay you ten times the fare."
"You got it!"
They swooped in with a direct cash injection—ten times what Silas offered. It completely covers our funding gap!"
Silas's investment had already been a lifesaver.
For someone to suddenly drop ten times that amount was unbelievable.
"Who is it? Who has that kind of cash lying around?" Sienna asked, genuinely intrigued by this mysterious benefactor.
"I just heard it from Director Barney Reed myself. I don't know the exact details, but the Director said we'd meet the man in person at the meeting."
Jonathan patted her shoulder. "Who cares who he is? As long as he keeps the project running, the guy writing the checks is the boss."
Sienna nodded, though a faint prickle of unease settled in her gut.
Before she could overthink it, a chaotic flurry of footsteps echoed down the hall.
The hushed, overly polite chatter of hospital executives shattered the quiet of the floor.
Sienna and Jonathan instinctively looked toward the door.
In the next second, both of their faces dropped.
