He knew Willow was utterly mortified right now, so he did not pester her to come out. He merely knocked lightly on her door. "Willow, I lost control today. I apologize, but I am ready to take full responsibility whenever you are."
Inside the room, Willow ruthlessly punched her stuffed animal. Who cared about his responsibility!
Receiving no response, Lucian wasn't bothered. He simply added, "I bought the apartment next door. I left a spare key on your table. If you need anything, you can come find me anytime."
He paused for a second before chuckling. "If you want to hit me to vent your anger, you are always welcome to do that, too."
Willow glared fiercely at the wooden door. "Just you wait! I'll assassinate you in the middle of the night!"
The threat carried zero intimidation and was instead unspeakably adorable. Lucian laughed aloud. "Alright. Dying in your arms sounds like a wonderful way to go."
Willow was completely helpless against him. If she hit him, he'd enjoy it. If she scolded him, he'd treat it as flirting.
She clamped her mouth shut, refusing to say another word to him.
Lucian didn't mind. He waited outside the door for a few more minutes before quietly leaving.
Hearing the front door click shut, Willow tentatively peeked out of her bedroom. Her eyes immediately landed on the key resting on the table.
She scoffed. "Who cares."
Yet her body betrayed her as she walked over. It wasn't until she pinched the key between her fingertips that she noticed something unusual.
Attached to the keychain was a ring. The design was bold and intricate, every curve radiating a unique aesthetic brilliance. The intertwining bands converged perfectly to cradle a breathtaking gemstone.
A flawless pigeon-blood ruby.
The kind of treasure money couldn't guarantee you could buy.
The ruby on the ring Lucian left was completely natural, untouched by artificial enhancements.
In that moment, Willow's thoughts spiraled. Was this because Sterling had given her a ring, and Lucian was jealous enough to try and overwrite that memory?
