She desperately tried to steady her racing heartbeat, swallowing the panic that threatened to leap from her throat. Her tone was fragile and full of grievance. "El... Elias, why? Did I do something wrong? Are you throwing me away?"
In the past, hearing such a pitiful voice would have melted Elias's heart, and he would have rushed to comfort her.
But at this moment, he simply straightened his cuffs with casual indifference. His tone was completely flat. "Tessa, the stunts you've been pulling lately have crossed the line. The Landon family will never accept a wife with a police record. We can't afford that kind of humiliation in our circles."
Every word he spoke felt like a needle, violently piercing into Tessa's flesh.
She knew this was just an excuse!
She lost control and argued back, "Willow framed me on purpose! How was I supposed to know her medication would go bad? I'm completely innocent, Elias. Willow is vicious and heartless..."
Before she could finish her sentence, Leo's figure blocked her path. "Shut up!"
Tessa jumped, instinctively looking up at him. That was when she realized the man's eyes were bloodshot, swirling with an intense, malicious disgust, as if he might physically attack her in the very next second.
Silas immediately grew anxious and quickly interjected. "Leo, why are you yelling at her? I acted entirely on my own. It has nothing to do with her."
Leo let out a cold scoff. "Nothing to do with her? If it weren't for her, how would you even know where Willow was?"
Silas was rendered speechless.
The police officer frowned at them. "Don't cause a scene here! Pay the bail and get out."
Leo shot Silas a fleeting glance, then turned on his heel and walked away, not even bothering to pay the bail. "If you refuse to show any remorse, you might as well stay locked up in here!"
Silas gasped heavily. He had no idea what had gotten into Leo. He'd only been abroad filming for a few months—how had everything changed so drastically by the time he got back?
All he could do was clench his jaw and shoot Elias a desperate, pleading look.
