Asher froze in place, his eyes wide with absolute disbelief.
He stared at Willow in a daze, his gaze locked onto her stunning face.
There was no trace of spite in her eyes, only a calm, unyielding seriousness. No matter how much Asher tried to lie to himself, he had to admit that this wasn't just a temper tantrum. She genuinely... wanted to break away from the Shaw family.
He practically panicked, looking away as his breathing turned chaotic and his voice trembled. "Willow, I know I might have been a little mean to you in the past, but do you really have to go this far?"
A little mean?
Willow repeated the phrase in her head and let out an abrupt laugh.
"Asher, don't you feel any guilt saying that? You were more than just 'a little mean' to me. For years, all of you treated me like an obedient tool, exploiting and hurting me without limits. Now that I refuse to be obedient anymore, why can't you handle it?"
Every single word Willow spoke felt like a jagged blade, continuously plunging into Asher's chest, twisting violently until it lacerated his heart into a bloody mess.
He opened his mouth, his voice hoarse. "Willow..."
"Forget it," Willow said, having no desire to waste any more breath on him. "If you can't do it, don't make promises."
With that, she turned on her heel and walked away.
Asher remained glued to the spot, gripping the armrests of his wheelchair, unable to chase after her.
Willow's attitude felt like a heavy, suffocating rain—it wasn't violently explosive, but it left him steeped in agonizing misery.
He broke into a violent coughing fit. Normally, Willow would have turned back instantly, but this time, she didn't even break her stride.
The ghostly pallor on Asher's face settled into dead silence. Stripped of all strength, he slumped back against his wheelchair, staring blankly out the window, unable to utter another word.
