Chapter 264
With that, I turned to go back inside.
“Restrain her!” the butler barked at the bodyguards. He strode quickly to the car and waited for the window to lower before bending down respectfully. “Madam, she refuses to come willingly.”
“Refuses?” Margaret’s voice was a venomous sneer from within the car. “Since when does she have a choice? Take her. Now.”
“Should we perhaps ascertain why she’s here first?” The butler, however angry he was at my defiance, was still cautious. “This is Breeze Villa, I’m concerned we might inadvertently offend…”
“Have you lost your mind?” Margaret cut him off, looking at him as if he were an idiot. “This is New York! Who, besides Gavin, would dare cross us?!”
Third–person POV
She wasn’t wrong. But the butler voiced his concern. “But if it’s an influential family from out of town, wouldn’t causing a scene be unwise….?” He was. by nature, a cautious man.
The Dowager Windsor, however, was arrogance personified.
“Hmph! Even if your guess is right, how many families are truly beyond our reach? The only one nearby we can’t afford to slight is the Sinclairs from Coastal City. Anyone else… why would they side with a nobody like Elara against the Windsors?!”
The Windsors couldn’t afford to offend the Sinclairs. By the same logic, other families couldn’t afford to offend the Windsors. There’d been no news of the Sinclairs coming to New York recently. What were the odds they were inside?
“You have a point, Madam…” the butler conceded.
“Then why are you still standing there? Go and drag her out!” Margaret glared furiously from the car at Elara’s resisting form. “If we’re late again, how am I supposed to explain this to the Vanderbilts?”
The butler paused thoughtfully. “Understood.” The Vanderbilt family, while not as powerful as the Windsors–especially under Gavin–were still a force to be reckoned with. Standing them up again would anger them, and the Dowager might not be able to smooth things over this time.
Elara’s POV
The bodyguards had a firm grip on me. I was too far to hear their conversation clearly, but I could guess it wasn’t anything good. Most likely, my divorce from Zane was now fully out in the open.
I saw the butler start walking back towards me. With a slight gesture from him, the two bodyguards began forcing me toward the car.
After all these years, I knew the old woman’s methods inside and out. But I still hadn’t expected her to be brazen enough to try a direct grab like this at
Breeze Villa.
I struggled violently, refusing to be shoved into the vehicle. My gaze, devoid of any warmth, locked onto the butler. “Do you have any idea where you are?” I demanded, my voice sharp and clear. “Do you know who I’m here treating today? And you think you can just take me without a word?”
My forceful tone gave the butler a moment’s pause. He was about to speak when the old woman’s voice, dripping with contempt, cut through the air from the car.
“That pathetic little ‘medical skills‘ of yours from playing doctor in a clinic? Don’t you dare try that ‘borrowing a tiger’s authority‘ nonsense with me.”
The last time they’d tried to take this wretched girl to an arranged meeting, she’d weaseled her way out of it.
This time, Margaret wouldn’t let her off so easily.
I couldn’t help but laugh, a cold, sharp sound.

Chapter 264
“Aren’t you afraid? What if it is someone important? If you insist on taking me, the least you could do is inform my host!” My confident demeur made the butler even more uneasy. 1le leaned closer to the car window, whispering urgently to Margaret, “Madam, perhaps I should first verify who exactly resides here…”
“Fool!” Margaret snapped, glaring at him.
“You’re as gullible as Theodore! Always falling for her tricks! Since when has anything that came out of her mouth been the truth? You men, one after another, all deceived by her!”
When I was a child, I’d mastered the art of playing dumb and feigning obedience. One by one, everyone in the main Windsor house had been taken in by my act. The servants, thinking me so well–behaved, would often go easy on me during punishments as long as Margaret wasn’t watching
Some even whispered behind her back, calling her cruel for being so hard on such a ‘sweet‘ girl.
And that incident with Theodore’s attempted assault, the one that got him shipped abroad? That was clearly a trap I’d laid. How else could it be explained? With so many guests still present, he’d just ‘lost his mind‘ and dragged me into a room, only to pass out before he could even get my clothes off?
Thinking of it all made Margaret’s blood boil.
This damned girl, just like her parents, was her personal curse!
So, of course, Margaret wasn’t listening to the butler’s cautious advice. She was convinced this was just another one of my clever ploys!
Her sharp gaze swept over the two bodyguards. “Why are you standing there? Get her in the car! Are you just going to let her stall?”
