Billionaire's Match (by Tangy Candy) novel Chapter 1200

The man froze for a moment at that, then burst out laughing.

"Trey, you really have some nerve. Look at the state you're in. If you could actually do anything to Khloe, would you be here waiting to die at our hands?"

"I can't, no. But aren't you still here? You want Khloe's weak spot, but in Goldmont City, with so many eyes watching and layers of protection around her, you can't touch her, let alone the people close to her. I, on the other hand, have a way to help you get exactly what you want, and it's worth a lot more to you than my life."

Trey's mouth curved as he spoke.

The man's grip tightened. "Spit it out already. No more games."

Trey craned his neck closer. The man hesitated a moment, then leaned in to listen.

Outside the warehouse, a faint glint flickered briefly through the tangled grass before vanishing back into the night.

…

The next day, at the Morrison Group headquarters.

Charlotte rushed into the conference room just as Ethan was stepping out through the door.

Seeing how pale and grim she looked, he frowned. "You're late. Something wrong?"

There had been a company-wide meeting scheduled that morning, and as the lead host, Charlotte should have arrived early, but she hadn't shown up even after the meeting ended.

Ethan had called her partway through, only to get a busy signal every time.

"Come with me!"

Charlotte didn't answer him. She grabbed his arm and pulled him along. Ethan looked startled, and though he protested out loud, his feet followed without resistance.

Charlotte dragged him down to the parking garage and got into his car before finally speaking. "To the airport."

"The airport?" Ethan didn't understand. "Did something happen to your brother?"

"No. It's Noah. He contacted me."

Charlotte looked at Ethan and took a few deep breaths before speaking seriously.

Ever since Noah had left, she'd made a habit of logging into her old game every night before bed. Last night, she'd suddenly gotten a private message from a familiar contact.

Whoever it was had spoken in a tone she knew well and delivered a piece of shocking news.

Trey was now with Lacuna's men, plotting something, likely a move against Khloe.

He would track them first and pass along updates, but since the size of the enemy's group was unknown, Charlotte should alert the police first and prepare backup.

It had taken this long for Noah's hold over Charlotte to finally start fading, to the point Ethan had actually begun to think...

If Noah just stayed away long enough, the two of them might finally have a real, lasting chance together.

"Ethan..."

Charlotte flushed red at his words, and it took her a long moment before she spoke. "I'm sorry. I wasn't thinking. If you don't want to come with me..."

"Who said I don't want to go?" Ethan cut her off. "Do I really seem like someone that heartless to you? Does Noah get to have all the loyalty around here?"

Charlotte fell silent again.

These past weeks, her relationship with Ethan had grown steadily closer. They weren't just well-matched work partners anymore; their friendship outside of work had grown warmer too.

She'd assumed Ethan had truly let go and moved on, which was why she'd stopped deliberately avoiding him the way she used to.

But now, it seemed his supposed change of heart and generosity hadn't been selfless at all.

Charlotte felt a flicker of disappointment, and something like hurt too, and she said nothing for a long while.

Ethan realized he'd overreacted as well. He reached up and yanked his tie loose, then pressed down on the gas and pulled straight onto the highway.
