Khloe felt a rush of warmth in her chest, and tears welled up in her eyes. Yet her lips curled into a quiet smile. She had known Nick would say this.

“But don’t push yourself too hard.” Nick added, his voice tinged with worry, as if sensing something. “Whatever comes, I’ll face it with you.”

Her casual words left the line on the other end silent. She waited a moment, then called his name again.
