< Chapter 148 Pretending Not to Know
Lucas was genuinely shocked.
Dominic nodded. “No.”
It wasn’t that he didn’t want to tell her. He didn’t dare.
Lucas thought for a moment and then said, “If that’s the case, then keep pretending you don’t know.”
Not knowing was still better than facing it head-on.
Facing it directly would mean losing everything.
Dominic said nothing.
Lucas continued, “Just remember this. This is probably your last chance.”
If Dominic did anything else during this time that upset Aurelia, then there would truly be no way back for them.
“Because once you face it openly,” Lucas added, “every demand she makes, you won’t be able to refuse.”
If Aurelia found out that Dominic fully understood she had been pregnant and had miscarried, then she would make demands. About Lauren. About the Hawthorne family.

And Dominic, no matter what, was still a Hawthorne.
He would take care of Leo no matter what.

Lucas left.
Dominic stayed in the study, smoking one cigarette after another, until the sky outside was completely dark.
He went to the kitchen and took a look.
When Mary saw him, she said respectfully, “These were prepared for Mrs. Hawthorne. Shall I bring them upstairs?”
“I’ll take them,” Dominic said.
Aurelia’s pale face flashed through his mind, and his breathing tightened.
For the first time, he felt an overwhelming sense of self-loathing.
Why had he not trusted her even a little? Why had he not paid her more attention back then?
If he had cared just a bit more, would their child have
survived?

He didn’t dare think any further.
The feeling was suffocating, as if countless thin tendrils were wrapping around his heart and pulling tighter and tighter.
Dominic took several deep breaths before pushing the door
open.
The room was brightly lit.
Aurelia was awake. She was sitting on the bed, on the phone, speaking to someone he couldn’t hear.
When she saw him come in, she said quickly into the phone, “You handle the Germany side of things. That’s it. Hang up.”
She ended the call.
Dominic looked at her pale face. The moment he heard the word “Germany,” his chest tightened again.
Germany?
What did she mean by having someone handle things over there? Did she have connections in Germany as well?
Thinking of the trouble Marilyn was facing there these past few days, Dominic’s gaze grew darker.

He carried the tray over. “You must be hungry. The chef made your favorites.”
“Is it poisoned?” Aurelia asked, her tone dripping with
sarcasm.
Dominic froze.
Already struggling to breathe, that single question made his chest constrict even further.
“Poisoned?”
The way she said it so lightly made his mouth curve into a bitter smile. “I’m sorry.”
Sorry for what?
For not believing her when she said she had miscarried?
Or for letting her live under constant threat from the Hawthorne family, even after losing the child?
Hearing him apologize, Aurelia glanced at him sideways. There was a flicker of surprise in her eyes, followed immediately by mockery.

He picked up the plate and looked at her. “Do you want me to feed you?”
“No. Get out,” Aurelia said bluntly.
Dominic fell silent.
“You smell disgusting,” she added. “I can’t eat like this.”
“I already took a shower,” Dominic said through clenched teeth.
“You still stink.”
Dominic had no words.
They stood in a stalemate.
If he didn’t leave, she wouldn’t eat.
In the end, Dominic gave in. He stood up. “Just eat.”
He didn’t leave the room, however, but went into the bathroom to shower again.
The moment he was gone, Aurelia started eating.

over people who were not worth it.
By the time she finished, Dominic came out of the bathroom, having scrubbed himself raw.
“Now?”
“Still disgusting,” Aurelia replied coldly.
Dominic was speechless.
Unbelievable.
He sat down by the bed.
Aurelia shot him an icy glance. “We need to talk,” Dominic
said.
“What’s there to talk about between us?” she replied.
“About our child.”
Aurelia stiffened.
The moment the word left his mouth, hostility radiated off her
in waves.

closely. Once your body stabilizes, you can have as many children as you want.”
While showering, he had thought long and hard.
Lucas was right. She needed a child.
Maybe only by having a child again could anything between them be repaired.
Aurelia narrowed her eyes, yanked her hand free, and slapped him across the face.
Dominic froze.
Before he could react, she slapped the other side of his face as well.
