had only just gone missing, and Lauren was probably still panicking inside. There was no way she’d reveal the baby’s location so easily.
“Give me an answer before sunrise then,” Aurelia added. Hiding your own daughter like this, what kind of scheme were you really running?
“And just so you know, I’m more than happy to call the police together.”
Lauren fell silent. What did she mean by that? Call the police together? If they reported it, Aurelia would report it too? On what grounds?
Before Lauren could respond, Aurelia hung up. The dial tone buzzed in Lauren’s ear, and she bit down on her lip so hard she almost drew blood.
The servant, Kellen, handed her a glass of water. “Ms. Drake, have some.”
Lauren took the water and glanced at the woman Marilyn had sent to look after her. This was a Drake family servant, not a Hawthorne.

brewing overseas, Lauren might not be treated well by the Hawthornes anymore.
Her mother really did see everything clearly. Ever since Marilyn’s business problems in Germany started, Eleanor’s attitude toward Lauren had become noticeably
unstable.
Lauren took a sip of water. “Can we give the baby to Aurelia right now?”
That was what Aurelia had just said on the phone. If they did that, she and Dominic would get divorced, and that was exactly what Lauren wanted.
Kellen shook her head slightly. “Wait a little longer.”
“I don’t think we need to wait. As long as she and Dominic get divorced, that’s good enough.”
That was the result she wanted.
“Plenty of divorced couples get back together.” Kellen pointed out.
Lauren went quiet.

“You took such a huge risk this time, Ms. Drake. The result you’re after can’t just be a divorce. You need to make sure they can never, ever get back together.”
“Right. They can’t get back together.”
Once they divorced, they needed to stay divorced forever.
“So right now, Mr. Hawthorne already believes Ms. Sterling took the baby, and that’s already opened up a huge crack in their relationship.” This wasn’t like the problems they’d had before. Those had all been minor squabbles.
But this time was different. If Dominic decided Aurelia had taken the baby, then he’d see her as a vicious woman through and through.
“Ms. Drake, don’t forget that what Mr. Hawthorne liked about her was her obedience and kindness.”
Lauren nodded, and a cold, malicious gleam flashed in her eyes. “Back then, he had his pick of all those society daughters, but what he wanted was Aurelia’s fake obedience and kindness, wasn’t it?”

backing and domineering personalities. Dominic hadn’t wanted to marry some princess he’d have to serve, so he’d married a woman who would serve him instead.
Kellen nodded. “She’s caused plenty of trouble lately, but in Mr. Hawthorne’s mind, she hasn’t destroyed that kind exterior yet. That’s why this time is different. A baby is not the same as burning down a house!”
“You’re right. She needs to become a vicious woman in Dominic’s eyes, so we wait. Keep me updated on the baby’s situation.” Lauren’s voice dripped with venom.
What she wanted wasn’t just a divorce between Aurelia
and Dominic.
She wanted them to have no chance of reconciliation, and even better, she wanted Dominic to personally send Aurelia to prison.
She wanted them both completely done with each other. Sending Aurelia to prison would be punishment for entering a world where she never belonged in the first place.
Kellen nodded. “Don’t worry. As soon as your daughter’s 576 condition worsens. they’ll send word.”

A flash of pain crossed Lauren’s eyes. Why was everything going wrong? Her son’s condition had already drained her these past few days, and now her daughter too…
Kellen continued, “We just got word that Mr. Hawthorne said if he doesn’t see the baby by tomorrow morning, he’ll report it to the police himself. So she’s getting desperate.”
Hearing that Dominic would report it to the police himself made Lauren’s sadness vanish, replaced by a surge of satisfaction. So Dominic was finally giving up on her. Using the baby as leverage had been the right gamble after all.

Dominic arrived at the hospital. The elevator doors dinged open, and he stepped out with that arrogant look in his eyes. Jason followed respectfully behind him, and they both headed toward Lauren’s room.
