Chapter 19 Especially Not Two Women
Fletcher Group.
As soon as Dominic walked in, he saw employees from all over the world bustling through the office.
He headed straight to Grant’s office door.
Through the glass, he spotted Grant signing a document and passing it to his assistant. “Scan this right away and send it to Smith Group. Tell them we’re on board with their terms.”
Miles Carter nodded. “Yes, sir.”
Turning around, Miles caught sight of Dominic and gave him a polite, respectful nod before stepping out.
Dominic pushed into the office. “Another international deal locked in?”
Grant was on a roll these past few years, not just domestically, but globally too.
Hawthorne Group held the title of New York’s number one on
paper.

Fletcher Group’s scale. They just kept a low profile.
Fletcher’s international projects had been crushing the market lately.
Dominic sank onto the sofa and lit a cigarette.
Grant ignored his question, snapping a file folder shut with a sharp thwack.
He stood up and sat across from Dominic.
Both men wore dress shirts–one dark, one light.
Dominic’s navy blue shirt, usually a color that exuded stability, did nothing to soften his air of rebellious arrogance.
Grant, by contrast, wore a pale–colored shirt that somehow radiated both quiet depth and understated elegance.
Miles brought in coffee for both of them.
Grant picked up his cup and took a slow sip. “Didn’t think you’d actually carve out time for this.”
His low tone wasn’t overtly sarcastic, but it still grated on Dominic’s nerves.
For the past six months, everyone around him told him to back 218
off from Lauren.

Grant never said a word about it.
But ever since Aurelia started making waves these past few days, from last night until now, Grant’s attitude shifted dramatically.
Dominic took another drag of his cigarette and studied Grant’s cold, sharp features.
Grant was several years older than him, yet that face of his drew a steady stream of admirers over the years.
He just had impossibly high standards. None of them ever caught his eye, let alone earned a single word of approval from him.
But he was quick to support Dominic’s divorce from Aurelia?
Noticing Dominic’s silence, Grant raised an eyebrow. “Did you come here just to zone out?”
“Why do you support me divorcing Aurelia?” Dominic asked, his voice dark and edged with suspicion.
He’d been too drunk to process it before, but now he was realizing just how odd Grant’s behavior was.
Grant set his coffee cup down with a soft clink, every
movement oozing refined poise.

When he spoke, his voice carried quiet weight. “A truly responsible man wouldn’t let a woman make such a mess for his sake–especially not two women!”
Dominic froze.
Things were certainly a mess now. Thanks to Aurelia’s campaign, the whole of New York knew Lauren had been pining after her married brother–in–law.
And Lauren was being branded a homewrecker. In truth, the situation was far uglier than a typical affair…
Dominic flicked ash from his cigarette and let out a bitter laugh. “This morning, Aurelia was picked up from the hospital by some German guy.
“I didn’t get why she suddenly blew up like this before, but now… Grant, tell me, why is she doing all this?”
Dominic’s gaze toward Grant sharpened noticeably.
Grant’s eyes narrowed slightly. “What do you think?”
Dominic kept his tone steady, though his jaw was tight. “She’d never pull a stunt this big without serious backing.”
As he spoke, his stare locked onto Grant, growing even more intense.

Aurelia might bicker and cause small–scale trouble, but she’d never make a spectacle so public that the entire city would be talking about it.
Now the whole Hawthorne family was in chaos.
And the media firestorm just kept growing.
There was no way she was orchestrating this alone. So who… was helping her?
Meeting Dominic’s sharp gaze, Grant’s lips twisted into a mocking smile.
“Is it that she wouldn’t make a scene without backing, or that
she wouldn’t dare?”
Dominic’s heart skipped a beat.
Grant pressed on, “You know your wife better than anyone. You just admitted that with the right support, she’d absolutely fight back like this.”
What did that say about him? It meant Dominic had always known how suffocated Aurelia felt in the Hawthorne family- especially while he’d been glued to Lauren’s side.
The air in the office turned thick with tension.

Dominic’s gaze turned icy as he stared at Grant. “Grant, what are you getting at? Are you the one helping her? You’re my friend, and you actually…”
Grant cut him off, his voice sharp. “Are you saying I’m picking sides? That as your buddy, I should help you and Lauren gang up on Aurelia?”
Dominic’s face drained of color at the biting words.
He stammered, “You…”
What the hell was Grant even implying?
Help him and Lauren gang up on Aurelia? When had he ever teamed up with Lauren?
He and Lauren were nothing like that!
And Grant… he’d always been so quiet, so reserved. When had
he developed such a sharp tongue?
Just as Dominic was about to fire back, his phone rang.
Seeing Aurelia’s number on the screen, Dominic felt a jolt of disorientation.
These past few days, he’d lost all contact with her. It felt like an uncrossable chasm had opened between them overnight. 6/8

Yet now she was calling him first… because of Grant?
Dominic answered, his breathing unsteady. “What is it?”
Aurelia’s voice was cold, sharp, and unyielding. “Our business has nothing to do with Mr. Fletcher.”
Lucas had just called her, saying Dominic had gone to confront Grant.
She hadn’t understood at first–not until Lucas explained the German man thing.
Dominic was suspecting that Grant sent him.
Grant’s company did employ plenty of Germans, but Dominic’s logic was beyond ridiculous…
She snapped, “You’ve clearly spent too much time around Lauren. It’s turned you completely paranoid!”
Dominic’s temper flared right back. “Aurelia, don’t push it!
Where are you? I’m coming to get you.”
Right now, all he wanted was to see her.
Aurelia shut him down instantly. “For what? To talk about Lauren? Spare me.”
