Chapter 238 Never Satisfied

“What did you do? You locked me outside the house at the crack of dawn-that’s what you did!” Eleanor echoed, spitting the words out like they were poison.
Lydia chimed in, “And me! Don’t forget about me!”
She’d managed to grab a blanket to wrap around herself, which had eased the chill a little, but the memory of starving and freezing on the porch made her want to strangle Aurelia.
Aurelia’s gaze sharpened, the word “rules” rolling off her tongue with deliberate weight.
“Rules. The very rules you set for this household. Are you saying you don’t have to follow them, but everyone else does?”
Eleanor’s face went pale, all the fight draining out of her at the reminder.
“Don’t you remember? When I first married into the Hawthorne family, you never tired of reminding me that a prestigious family like yours had rules-rules that were nothing like those in an orphanage.” Aurelia pressed on.
Eleanor stared at her, her mouth opening and closing wordlessly.

up to cloud his already grim expression. “Aurelia, just tell me what you want.”
He had no patience left for her games.
When he’d opened the door and seen Eleanor and Lydia huddled outside in their thin nightgowns, he’d realized this relationship was beyond saving.
There was no point in dragging it out any longer.
Aurelia let out a humorless chuckle. “What do I want? What right do I have to want anything in this house? What would I dare ask for?”
Dominic fell silent, his jaw tightening.
“You won’t dare? After all the trouble you’ve stirred up, how can you pretend you’re not after something? You’ve won, Aurelia! You’ve got us right where you want us!” Eleanor let out a bitter laugh, her eyes blazing with resentment.
She threw her hands up in frustration, her voice rising to a shout.
“Name your price! We’ll give you whatever you want! Isn’t that enough for you?”
Aurelia’s smile turned into a smirk, her tone dripping with 21:11

Eleanor and Lydia stared at her, their faces going slack with
shock.
The words hit them like a punch to the gut, making them feel lightheaded with rage.
“I don’t want a single thing from the Hawthorne family. So spare me the accusations of being after your money. I’m not here for your wealth,” Aurelia continued, her voice ringing with clarity.
Once, they’d accused her of being a gold digger at every turn, of marrying Dominic just for his fortune.
Now she was telling them she wanted nothing-and that was far more terrifying than any demand for money could ever be.
Eleanor stared at her, her voice trembling with disbelief. “Pretending to be this noble? How could you possibly not want our money?”
“I don’t,” Aurelia repeated firmly, emphasizing each word.
The two simple syllables felt like a knife twisting in Eleanor’s heart.
Once, she’d delighted in tormenting Aurelia, in plotting to kick her out of the house with nothing but the clothes on her back.

Now, Eleanor would give anything-all the money in the world -to make Aurelia walk away voluntarily.
Eleanor stammered, at a complete loss for words, “You… you…”
“Aurelia!” Dominic barked, his patience finally snapping. He’d had enough of her mind games.
“I’m not getting a divorce.”
No matter what he was about to say, Aurelia had only one answer for him. “I’m not getting a divorce.”
With that, Dominic crushed his cigarette butt into the ashtray, stood up abruptly, and strode toward the door without another
word.
Eleanor panicked, rushing after him. “Wait! You can’t leave.
now!”
“Stay here and watch the company go bankrupt with you?” Dominic shot back, his words sharp with bitterness.
The word “bankrupt” stopped Eleanor dead in her tracks.
She’d heard the rumors—the company was drowning in trouble, and things were only getting worse.
the end, Dominic left, slamming the door behind him.

With him gone, only Eleanor and Lydia remained, staring daggers at Aurelia.
Aurelia raised an eyebrow at them, her tone casual as if nothing had happened. “What are you standing around for? Mrs. Hawthorne and Ms. Hawthorne haven’t had breakfast yet. Bring their meal out.”
At the mention of food, a flicker of relief crossed Eleanor and Lydia’s faces.
But since the order had come from Aurelia, their hearts were in their mouths, unease gnawing at them.
Sure enough, when the plates were set down in front of them, their face paled.
The dishes were a mushy, unrecognizable mess-leftovers from the night before, reheated into a slop that looked utterly unappetizing.
Eleanor’s body shook with rage, her voice rising into a shriek. “What on earth is this slop you’re trying to feed us?”
Aurelia shrugged, her tone dripping with mockery. “You’re impossible to please. When I didn’t give you food, you accused me of being a terrible woman. Now that I’ve had food prepared for you, you complain about the quality. Some people are never satisfied.” 5/6
