Chapter 258 She Knew
When it came to just how small Rachel’s place actually was, Lydia couldn’t help but complain.
“Mom, what have you been thinking all these years? Is Rachel actually your daughter or not?”
“What are you talking about?” Eleanor snapped.
Of course Rachel was her daughter!
“She’s your daughter, but you’ve treated Rachel like garbage for years. I’ve never seen you give her any spending money.”
The truth was, Rachel had zero status in the Hawthorne family all these years.
Eleanor rarely gave her any spending money, and Rachel barely asked for any either, especially after she graduated—she basically stopped taking money from the family altogether.
When the family didn’t offer, she didn’t ask.
“It’s not that I didn’t want to give her money,” Eleanor said defensively. “She never asked me for any, unlike you, who’s constantly asking me for cash.”
Lydia went quiet. Well, that was one way to put it.

“You know, if you’d just bought Rachel a bigger place sooner, we wouldn’t be scrambling for somewhere to stay right now,” Lydia said. Then she added, “I still don’t get what Rachel sees in Aurelia. She’s literally the only one in the whole Hawthorne family who actually gets along with her.”
It genuinely baffled her.
Eleanor shot her a look but didn’t say anything.
“Do you think Aurelia really hates me that much?” Eleanor finally asked.
“What do you mean?” Lydia asked.
“Haven’t you noticed? She changed overnight,” Eleanor said.
Lydia blinked. Changed overnight?
“Before, she couldn’t stand my attitude and kept trying to divorce Dominic, right? But now she’s back and making our lives hell. You really think it’s just because I treated her badly?” Eleanor asked.
Lydia froze. Holy shit. Eleanor had a point.
When Aurelia couldn’t stand the Hawthorne family anymore, she’d been obsessed with getting that divorce. She’d fought for it constantly. 2/6

And then right when Dominic finally agreed to let her go, she suddenly changed her mind and refused to leave.
“What if she never actually wanted to leave the Hawthorne family in the first place?” Lydia suggested.
“Then why the hell is she acting like this? This isn’t how someone who wants to stay behaves,” Eleanor snapped.
If Aurelia genuinely loved Dominic and wanted to stay with the Hawthornes, her current behavior made no sense.
“So she’s just getting revenge on us now? All because I treated her like crap before?” Eleanor said.
Lydia stayed quiet.
“Isn’t that exactly what’s happening?” Eleanor pressed.
The way Eleanor had treated Aurelia before was pretty brutal, honestly. She’d even confiscated gifts that Dominic had specifically given to Aurelia and kept them for herself.
That kind of behavior would make anyone’s blood boil. Their relationship had been seriously toxic.
Eleanor shook her head. “No, it’s not that.”
Lydia frowned. “Not that?”

“If she wanted revenge for what I did to her before, she wouldn’t have waited this long,” Eleanor said.
Lydia stayed quiet, waiting for her to continue.
“She would’ve refused the divorce from the start if that was her plan,” Eleanor added.
If Aurelia really wanted to make things difficult, she wouldn’t have waited until now.
Lydia leaned forward. “So what are you saying?”
“Something must have happened-something that changed her attitude.”
“Like what?” Lydia asked.
“I don’t know, but I’m sure something happened that made her change her mind,” Eleanor said.
If nothing had happened, Aurelia and Dominic would already be divorced by now instead of dealing with all this drama.
Lydia’s mind raced. Something happened? But what could it. be?
“Something definitely happened, but what?” Eleanor
murmured to herself.

Right now, she desperately wanted to know why Aurelia was staying at the Hawthorne Manor.
She needed to understand what was driving Aurelia’s revenge.
If it was about what happened before, Eleanor didn’t buy it.
Sure, she’d been cruel to Aurelia back then, but not cruel enough to deserve this level of payback.
Even though Aurelia had only been back for two days, they’d already seen that vicious streak in her.
She was ruthless-terrifyingly so.
Eleanor couldn’t believe that kind of ruthlessness didn’t come from some deep-seated hatred.
Lydia leaned forward and asked, “So what the hell happened?”
Eleanor opened her mouth, but nothing came out.
Yeah, what did happen? Why did Aurelia hate her so much? No -it wasn’t just hate directed at her. Aurelia hated the entire Hawthorne family.
Lydia stared at her and waited for an answer.
“That’s it,” Eleanor said suddenly. “She came to Hawthorne 5/6

family.”
The more Eleanor talked, the more convinced she became of her own theory.
Aurelia had to hate the Hawthornes. Why else would she cause this much chaos?
Lydia frowned and said, “Even if she hates the family, isn’t it because of what we did to her before?”
For once, under all this pressure, Lydia actually felt a flicker of guilt. Maybe they really had been too harsh on Aurelia.
But Eleanor shook her head and said, “No. It’s not about what happened before.”
“If it was, she would’ve started all this drama back then. Why wait until now?”
Something must have happened to Aurelia recently, something that triggered all of this.
Lydia threw up her hands and asked, “Then why? What’s her reason?”
