“Take it easy,” Marilyn reassured her. “Dominic’s been checked out of that marriage for months. If he truly believed Aurelia, things wouldn’t have fallen apart this bad between them.”

By the time he finished, his whole body radiated cold fury. He turned on his heel and headed straight for Marilyn’s room.

The second he stepped off the elevator, he ran into Lauren.

Her eyes flooded with tears. “Dominic, why? Tell me why Aurelia would do this to my mom? Does she want her dead that badly?”

She choked on a sob, clutching her chest. “I’m already suffering enough. If she wants to hurt me, fine. Let her come for me. But leave my mom out of it! She didn’t do anything wrong!”

She looked so broken, so helpless, like a wounded bird. Any other guy would’ve folded, would’ve pulled her into his arms and comforted her.

Lauren grabbed the hem of his shirt with both trembling hands. “It’s all my fault. I never should’ve leaned on you like this. Your face… it makes me think of Adrian. I keep forgetting he’s gone. I’m so sorry… It’s all my fault.”

Lauren’s sobs grew louder.

Dominic ignored Eleanor’s yelling. He wrenched his shirt out

of Lauren’s grasp in one sharp, ungentle motion.
