He threw the cigarette butt to the ground and crushed it under his shoe, then straightened his suit jacket with a casual, dismissive gesture.

Faced with Marilyn’s insistence on being shown respect, Dominic just shot her a contemptuous glance. “If nothing goes wrong, Stanley’s going to have a little accident.”

“No!” Marilyn cried out, her voice cracking with fear.

Her eyes-usually sharp with the triumphant glint of someone who always got her way-were now wide with panic.

Having walked the line between legality and crime for years, she knew exactly what Dominic meant by “a little accident.”

In that moment, Marilyn truly panicked, all her usual arrogance melting away.

But Dominic had no intention of dealing with her. He slid his hands into his suit pockets and headed straight for the door.

He was just reaching the doorway when Lauren and Eleanor hurried in.

Eleanor froze, eyes wide at the mess “You little punk! WIXtClose have you done?

Lauren’s heart also sank as she took in the chaos of the room

and Marilyn’s pale, terrified face.

Dominic ignored Eleanor completely, stepping past her without a single glance and walking out.

“You! Stop right there!” Eleanor shouted, her voice shrill with fury.

But the only response she got was the sound of his footsteps fading down the hallway.

At that moment, Eleanor was so angry she felt like her heart was going to explode. “I can’t handle this anymore! That kid is completely out of mind!”

She hurried over to the bed, trying to sound comforting as she spoke to Marilyn. “Marilyn, are you okay?”

But Marilyn was trembling with rage. With Dominic gone, she had no patience left for anyone.

She turned her face away from Eleanor, refusing to even look at her.

Eleanor pressed on anyway, undeterred by the cold shoulder. “Marilyn, I’m so sorry about this. I’ll go talk some sense into that punk right away. Just tell me, what did he say to you?”

Marilyn stayed silent, her jaw clenched so tight it looked like it might break.

What did he say? He didn’t need to say much. He’d come in here, radiating nothing but fury-all because of Aurelia.

Damn it. Even now, he still cares about that girl?

What had that orphan-raised wild thing said to him? How could he trust her so completely?

Marilyn’s heart thundered with rage, her blood boiling in her

veins.

“Please leave,” she said finally, her voice cold and sharp. “I want to be alone for a while.”

Marilyn had zero interest in Eleanor’s endless nagging.

Eleanor opened her mouth to say more, but the sheer impatience in Marilyn’s tone made her swallow her words.

She glanced at Lauren, who was sitting quietly in her wheelchair by the bed.

“Lauren, please stay and comfort your mother,” she said softly.

Lauren nodded, a small “mm” escaping her lips.

Seeing Lauren agree, Eleanor looked at Marilyn once more. When it was clear Marilyn really didn’t want her around, she left.

The second Eleanor was gone, Marilyn unleashed a massive tantrum-verbal, at least, since she couldn’t move to smash anything.

If she’d been able to get out of bed, she would have torn the entire room apart.

“What the hell is wrong with you?” she snapped at Lauren, her voice dripping with venom. “What have you been doing these past six months? Why does Dominic still care so much about that little bitch?”

All her frustration and anger poured out, directed straight at her daughter.

Lauren looked up at her, her eyes filled with grievance. “I did everything you told me to do. I followed every single one of your plans.”

Marilyn fell silent, her rage fading a little at the sound of Lauren’s weak, hurt voice.

Lauren was her daughter, after all. Her anger was more about frustration than anything else-frustration that Lauren hadn’t

been able to get the job done.

Marilyn closed her eyes, her jaw tight with resentment. “We clearly underestimated Aurelia before. I never expected Dominic to trust her so completely.”

She didn’t know what Aurelia had said to him, but his complete lack of respect toward her just now said it all. He was on Aurelia’s side.

They’d been fighting like cats and dogs these past few months, and yet he was still protecting her this fiercely.

“And that Grant too,” Marilyn added, her voice low and bitter as she ground her teeth together.

Thinking about how Grant had stormed into Oakridge Estate today and swept Aurelia away, leaving Gareth behind… Marilyn’s anger flared all over again.

She was convinced that Gareth was one of Grant’s people. After all, Grant’s company hired a lot of foreign talent.

Marilyn was absolutely livid, her hands curling into fists

despite the pain shooting through her body.

Just then, her phone buzzed loudly.

pain shot through her arm. Her hands were still too sore to move properly.

“Help me answer the phone,” she told Lauren, her voice tight with irritation.

“Oh, okay.”

Lauren quickly leaned over, picked up the phone, pressed the answer button, and held it to Marilyn’s ear.

The call was from Ray.

Ray’s panicked voice came through the speaker. “Mrs. Drake, this is bad. Stanley’s in trouble.”

Marilyn’s breath hitched, her voice coming out in a heavy, strained gasp. “I know. Dominic was behind it.”

“What? Mr. Hawthorne?” Ray’s voice rose an octave in shock.

“Then what do we do now?”
