Chapter 9 Let Go!
Lauren had been fighting back the whole time. But the second she caught Dominic and Eleanor out of the corner of her eye, tears sprang up instantly.
“I didn’t mean it like that. I really didn’t know,” she cried. “Aurelia, please let me go. Ah… my wound hurts so much.”
The moment she mentioned her wound, Eleanor’s rage snapped.
“Aurelia, let Lauren go!”
She charged into the room like a madwoman.
Lauren’s act was so sudden and perfect that Aurelia knew right away Dominic and Eleanor had arrived. A faint smile tugged at her lips as she met the triumph in Lauren’s eyes.
Her grip on Lauren’s hair tightened. With a hard, sharp thud, Lauren’s head slammed into the bed rail.
“Ahhh-!” Lauren screamed.
Eleanor shrieked and lunged forward, yanking Lauren into her arms like a shield. The look she shot Aurelia was pure murder.
“Are you out of your mind? If you want to lose it, do i somewhere else! She just had a C–section How could you do

this to her?”
Lauren clutched her lower belly, her face pinched white with pain. “Ah… my belly hurts. It really hurts.”
Hearing that made Eleanor even more frantic. “How can you be so vicious? How can you treat her like this?”
Since she’d given the Hawthornes two children, Lauren was the family’s golden girl now–cherished and protected above everyone else.
There was no way Eleanor would ever let Aurelia lay a hand on
her.
Aurelia let out a cold laugh.
“A C–section? She was willing to throw herself out of her wheelchair just to get Dominic’s attention, not even caring if her incision tore back open. So why should I care?”
Last night, Lauren’s fall from the wheelchair had been way too
convenient.
Who was supposed to believe it wasn’t on purpose?
She didn’t even care if her incision ripped back open–and now they wanted everyone else to tiptoe around her like she was made of glass? Ridiculous.

Eleanor snapped, “What kind of bullshit are you-
“Still want me to apologize?” Aurelia cut in with a cold snort,
With a single look, she dismissed Eleanor and fixed her eyes on Dominic.
His lips were pressed into a hard line as he stared back.
There was a chill in his gaze she’d never seen before.
Aurelia knew he was really angry.
Angry for Lauren.
She broke eye contact and turned back to Lauren. “Save the act. I can’t stand people performing in front of me.”
Her voice stayed flat, almost lazy. “Remember this. Next time you try it, this is exactly what you’ll get.”
“Get out!” Eleanor shrieked. “Get out of here!”
Aurelia didn’t even bother to look at her. She turned and
headed for the door.
As she passed, Dominic grabbed her wrist.
She stopped and glanced down at his hand. “What? Still want 3/1.0
me to apologize?”

“Let her go.” Lauren spoke first, before Dominic could.
Her wound was throbbing, and she didn’t want Aurelia to make an even bigger scene.
“I’m calling 911! I’m calling 911!” Eleanor shouted.
Aurelia had stopped showing her even a shred of fear, and Eleanor completely lost it. She wanted the police to drag Aurelia out in cuffs.
Aurelia turned back, expression cool. “Call them. Go ahead.”
The sheer ease in her tone nearly sent Eleanor into the floor with rage.
Aurelia walked out.
Dominic shot a quick look at Eleanor and Lauren, then turned and went after her.
Eleanor was shaking with fury. “This is insane. What kind of woman did he marry? And he’s still letting her do whatever she wants!”
“Please… call the doctor.”
Lauren clutched her lower belly, voice shaking with pain.

Seeing the way Lauren was crumpling, Eleanor panicked. “Oh -Lauren, you… okay, okay. I’m calling a doctor.”
She tried to help Lauren back onto the bed. But the second her hand touched Lauren, something warm and sticky smeared across her palm. Eleanor looked down.
Blood.
“Ahhh-!”
The sight sent her into a full–on spiral. She slammed the emergency call button.
“Lauren, hang on. I’m here,” she said, trembling. “I’m not letting Aurelia get away with this.”
That damned orphan–I should’ve dealt with her a long time
ago.
Before, Eleanor had held back. She hadn’t wanted to blow up her relationship with Dominic over some worthless woman.
But now look at this–Aurelia had thrown the whole family into chaos.
Right then, Eleanor wanted nothing more than to kill Aurelia with her own hands.

bad. Is this what happens when my husband’s gone? I just get bullied like this?”
Her voice cracked on the last word.
Eleanor went quiet.
At the mention of Adrian, her expression stiffened, then softened into something almost broken. She looked at Lauren like her heart was being torn out.
Tears kept spilling down Lauren’s cheeks. “I guess that’s how it is, right? Without Adrian… no one’s protecting me anymore. I’ve got nothing left.”
Eleanor pulled her into her arms.
“Don’t say that, sweetheart,” she murmured, stroking her hair. “I’m protecting you. How could you have nothing? You still have your babies, remember?”
Lauren’s despair was dragging her under again, and Eleanor scrambled to pull her back. At the same time, her hatred for Aurelia curdled into something darker.
That vicious bitch. I’m going to kick her out of the Hawthorne family—and then I’m going to kill her.

Meanwhile, Aurelia headed back to her room, Dominic following close behind.
“Why are you following me?” She spun around, her voice sharp. “I’m not apologizing to Lauren. And if I do apologize, it’ll be exactly the same way I just did.”
Every word was flat and firm–no room for negotiation.
Dominic stepped closer and wrapped his arms around her from behind. “Then don’t apologize.”
Aurelia’s heart jolted.
But before she could say a word, he added, “Still… how could you hit her? She just gave birth.”
Her heart sank right back down.
How could I hit Lauren?
Really?
“You’d better make sure she never shows up in front of me again,” Aurelia said coldly. “Because if she does, I’ll hit her every single time I see her.”
She’d already made it clear in that hospital room–those slaps were only the beginning. 7/10

Compared to the two children she’d lost, a few slaps were nothing.
This was just the start.
Dominic’s arms tightened around her. “Aurelia.”
“Let go.”
Her voice was ice as she struggled against him.
Dominic didn’t want to release her. But then Eleanor’s call lit
up his phone.
He declined it, jaw clenched.
It rang again almost immediately.
Aurelia glanced at the screen. “You should answer. Your precious sister–in–law’s probably having another crisis.”
Dominic let out a tired sigh. “That mouth of yours.”
He sounded completely exasperated, and then he finally let her
Aurelia let out a short, cold snort. “After all, I was pretty rough with her just now.”

The moment the call connected–before he could even speak- Eleanor’s hysterical sobs blasted through the line.
“Dominic, get over here right now! Lauren’s extremely emotional, and her abdominal wound reopened. Hurry and come!”
The speaker wasn’t quiet at all. Every word carried straight to Aurelia.
She looked at Dominic with a cold, mocking smile.
Dominic couldn’t stand that look. He snapped into the phone, “If she’s emotional, call a psychiatrist. If her wound reopened, call a surgeon. What do you expect me to do?”
“You-” Eleanor sputtered, but Dominic hung up before she could finish.
Aurelia blinked, genuinely surprised by his outburst.
For a moment, the ice in her eyes thawed.
Dominic stepped forward and pulled her into his arms again.
“Auri, stop throwing a tantrum, okay?” His voice was low, coaxing.
But the tone… the tone made it clear he was tired–wanting her 9/10

to be good, to be understanding.
He wasn’t comforting her.
He was trying to quiet her. To keep her from causing trouble.
Aurelia stepped out of his arms, her expression colder than ever as she looked at him.
