Isabel also fell to the ground.
Edmund rushed over and placed an antidote pill in her mouth.
Adrian was powerless to stop him. As Isabel came to, she pulled off the blindfold and led Edmund back to the car.
"Stay in the car. Give me the rest of the antidote. I'll give it to your dad."
Edmund handed them over, and Isabel administered the antidote to Julian and Admiral Hawke.
Julian and the Admiral then gave the pills to their own men.
Soon, everyone on their side had recovered.
Isabel looked over at Adrian, who was struggling to stay upright. She asked Edmund, "Will it be life-threatening?"
"No, Mommy. He'll be fine in a little while. It takes about two hours. If he's healthy and has a fast metabolism, he might be able to move in an hour."
Using such a restricted substance was a last resort.
Isabel didn't want a child to have blood on his hands.
She didn't want any herself.
"Let's go, then."
Isabel's group departed.
Before leaving, Admiral Hawke spoke with the airport authorities.
Fortunately, it was a small, private airport with few flights scheduled for the day. They had also received a tip to evacuate passengers and staff.
There was no significant damage.
And even if there had been, Adrian would be the one paying for it.
...
Admiral Hawke parted ways with Julian midway.
"Next time, have your wedding at my place. I guarantee no one will be able to disrupt it."
Children like Edmund were rare. If she tried to guide him, he was already so sensible, and what he said was right—protecting oneself was important.
But if she didn't guide him, she worried he might go astray.
The line between genius and madness was a fine one.
"Don't overthink it," Julian said, poking Isabel's forehead. "You're frowning like an old woman."
"I guarantee this little rascal won't go off the rails."
That reassured Isabel. She told Edmund, "Your great-grandfather makes the most delicious beef pastries. You should have a few later."
"Yay!"
But when Isabel walked inside, old Mr. Reed wasn't there.
For a moment, she panicked.
Julian sat down on a lounge chair in the yard and gestured for her to join him. "Have a seat. He just landed. His flight was around the same time as ours."
