Isabel went to boil some water and made a cup of bubble tea for Edmund to try.
"This is delicious."
"But you can't have too much; it's a bit rich," Isabel said. She asked Julian if he wanted any, but he declined. "I can't drink that stuff. It's too strong for me."
Isabel poured him a cup of water instead.
The mountain air was cool at night. She lit the small stove in the yard and started roasting potatoes and sweet potatoes.
Besides the medicinal herbs and fields, old Mr. Reed also grew his own fruits and vegetables here.
"Have you gotten in touch with him? When will old Mr. Reed be here? I can start making something to eat, so it'll be ready when he arrives."
"About another hour, probably," Julian said. "The mountain roads are tricky at this time."
"Then tell him to take it slow. Let's have some roasted potatoes first. I'll start cooking when he gets here."
"You should rest for a bit," Julian said, taking a roasted potato from her. "You've been bustling around so much you're making my head spin."
Isabel sat down on a small stool and broke open a roasted sweet potato for Edmund. "Careful, it's hot."
"Thanks, Mommy." Edmund took it and ate in small bites, white puffs of breath escaping his mouth and dissipating into the air.
"This is so good! It's so sweet and warm."
"You look like you've never seen the world," Julian remarked. "What's so special about this? The food you usually eat is practically gilded."
Edmund immediately tattled. "Mommy, Daddy's being mean to me."
Isabel turned and gave Julian a light smack on the arm, nearly knocking the roasted potato from his hand.
Julian wasn't pleased. "You owe me one."
"It didn't fall, did it?" Isabel laughed. "And who was it just now saying this was nothing special? Since you're so worldly, you shouldn't eat it."
Julian clicked his tongue. "Alright, so the two of you are ganging up on me, is that it?"
Isabel and Edmund exchanged a look, then simultaneously put their hands on their hips. "Yeah, what are you gonna do about it?"
