She still had some questions about traditional medicine to ask him.
Edmund was delighted. "That would be great!"
Isabel smiled. "Now, get some sleep."
...
Winter mornings in the mountains were especially chilly.
Edmund didn't feel it while bundled up in bed, but when he tried to get out, his teeth started chattering from the cold.
"You think this is cold? You've never been to the far north."
Edmund was born in a country with no winter and later lived with Julian in Aurelia City.
He had never truly seen snow.
Nor had he ever felt this cold.
"Why are you being so snarky? He may be a genius, but he's still a nine-year-old boy. Hurry up and get him his clothes. They've been warming by the fire, so they'll be nice and toasty."
"Don't spoil him," Julian said. "Why can't he get up and dress himself? We all did. What, you think it's not cold for us adults to get out of a warm bed?"
Isabel didn't bother arguing with him. How childish, bickering with a kid.
She took the clothes to Edmund and tucked them under his covers.
"Get dressed under the blanket before you come out. Your great-grandfather is making pastries in the kitchen, and it's really warm in there with the fire going. Hurry up."
After giving instructions, Isabel went to the kitchen to help.
Edmund quickly dressed and found it wasn't so cold once he was out.
He clutched his stomach. "Daddy, I need to use the bathroom."
Julian took him.
Thankfully, he had installed a modern bathroom in the cabin during a previous renovation. Otherwise, Edmund would be complaining about a cold behind.
"Great-grandpa!" Now that he was warm and had used the bathroom, Edmund was feeling much better and more like his cheerful self. "That smells amazing!"
Isabel broke off a piece and gave it to old Mr. Reed, then popped a bite into Julian's mouth before starting on her own.
When the next one was ready, Edmund took it and gave it to Isabel. "You have it, Mommy."
Old Mr. Reed remarked to Julian, "He's a good kid. Much better than the biological one."
"Of course. I wouldn't just take any kid under my wing," Julian said, watching the fire. Once it was stable, he stood up, dusted off his hands, and grabbed a pastry from the pan. "This one's a treasure," he said while eating. "He protects her even better than I can. You can rest easy, old man."
...
After breakfast, the group went to visit Isabel's grandmother.
Julian had somehow arranged for offerings to be delivered.
They brought the beef pastries her grandmother had loved, along with other cakes.
Isabel knelt before the gravestone, arranging everything neatly.
She spoke for a while, then pulled Edmund over to introduce him. "Grandma, this is my and Julian's son, old Mr. Reed's great-grandson, and your great-grandson, Edmund."
