Dr. Lawson was ecstatic. "When my family member recovers, I'll have to treat you to a meal to thank you personally."
"That won't be necessary," Isabel said. "If all goes well, I'll be flying to the Fiorhaven Principality tomorrow."
"Well, then perhaps another time," Dr. Lawson said with a hint of regret. It wasn't as if she would never return to Westbridge.
Isabel nodded and went back to Julian's room.
She did a little spin in front of him. "Safe and sound."
Julian just snorted.
That night, all was quiet. Adrian's side was silent.
But that silence only made Isabel more uneasy.
"Can't sleep?"
Julian heard her tossing and turning. "If that cot is uncomfortable, you can sleep in the next room, or go back to Evergreen Ridge Estate."
"Did I wake you?" Isabel sat up. "I'm sorry."
"I wasn't asleep yet," Julian said. "And stop apologizing to me all the time. My ears are starting to hurt."
Isabel smiled. "Well, I can't leave, so you'll have to bear with it. I have to take care of you."
"I'm doomed to a short life, then."
"Don't say that!" Isabel chided.
Julian shrugged it off but still muttered, "Knock on wood," before asking, "What are you thinking about? Worried you won't get the divorce?"
Isabel sat cross-legged on the cot, resting her chin on her hand with a sigh. "To be honest, when I married Adrian, I never once thought about divorce. I never imagined that getting one would be harder than getting married."
The only light in the room came from the hallway, casting everything in shadows. It was impossible to read each other's expressions.
"Let me ask you something," Julian said.
"Of course not," Julian laughed. "You've already taken my old man's life's work. If I don't marry you, the Reed family will be at a huge loss."
Isabel shot him a look. "Don't worry. Even if he gave up Selena for me, I would still get the divorce."
"When I say I don't love him anymore, I mean it."
Otherwise, what was all this trouble for?
"I believe you," Julian said. "Anything else you need to get off your chest? If not, get some sleep. You've got a battle to fight tomorrow."
Isabel felt better having said it all. She went back to the cot and lay down. "Goodnight."
"Goodnight."
Neither of them noticed the figure standing at the door to the hospital room.
Only after they finished speaking did the person turn and walk away.
