"I want to get you a security detail—two female bodyguards," Beasley said.
The car was quiet, and Waller's hearing was sharp enough to catch every word coming through the receiver.
"I don't need them," Willow rejected him coldly.
It was like a wolf offering to guard a flock of sheep. He definitely had an ulterior motive.
"The person targeting you didn't just order Zoe to drug you, they went as far as murder," Beasley's voice was low and intense. "Do you have any idea how much danger you're in right now?"
Beneath his deep tone hid a faint, almost imperceptible trace of disappointment. "I know you don't trust me, and I know you have a friend in the police department. But your friend can't protect you twenty-four-seven, can he?"
"To be completely honest, I already stationed people at the hospital yesterday to keep an eye on your father's safety. I'm sorry for not telling you sooner."
Willow gripped her phone tightly, fighting to keep her rising anger in check. "What exactly are you trying to pull?"
"I'm trying to protect you," he answered without missing a beat.
"Thanks for the offer, but I don't. Need. It!" She deliberately punctuated the last three words with venom.
If she wasn't worried about tipping him off, she would have torn off her polite mask and declared all-out war on him right then and there.
But her ultimate goal was to find solid proof that he was the mastermind behind everything, not to scare him into covering his tracks.
"If you dare send anyone to follow me, I'm calling the cops," she warned.
Without waiting for his response, she hung up.
Waller glanced at the fuming woman next to him, his voice softening instinctively. "Don't let him get to you."
Willow set her phone down, taking a slow breath to steady her nerves. "I'm fine."
He gave her a moment to calm down before asking, "How well do you actually know Beasley?"
Staring out at the passing scenery, she let out a self-deprecating laugh. "I was married to the guy for seven years, but I didn't see his true colors until the day those three foreign mercenaries kidnapped me. Ridiculous, isn't it?"
