Chapter 133

ΚΑΤ

Nathan had been out cold for three days.

I wiped the sweat off his forehead again and threw the face cloth back into the bowl. His whole body was like that, as if he was sweating the poison out of his system. He stunk of magic and something else I couldn’t put my finger on.

At least those dark veins no longer threaded his skin. Only faint marks remained on what I could see of his skin.

That first night, Hunter had helped him up the stairs, and along the way, Nathan had stopped and placed his hand on the walls. He’d whispered some words, and just like at the cabin, his eyes glowed, and a surge of power surrounded me. It had wrapped around my senses like a shield, so thick in the air that the anxiety caused by that creeping darkness faded.

He’d warded the house before he passed out.

It had been Hunter who’d stripped him and settled him in bed. The faint scent of body wash suggested he’d washed him, too. Hunter had pinned me down with his gaze and swore he hadn’t, then he’d told me to leave that stuff for the servants in the morning. I wasn’t allowed to touch Nathan. I was just grateful Nathan made it out of the castle, so I didn’t say anything about that.

But he’d let me watch over him that night until I was sure his heartbeat remained steady. Until I sensed several auras come into the house at dawn. I’d been groggy when I walked out of the room at the other end of the hall from Hunter’s room.

Hunter had walked down the hall with several women in uniforms carrying supplies behind him. The way they kept their gazes down reminded me of the omegas in the castle, and that familiar twist of discomfort settled in my gut. But their auras were more powerful than those of werewolves. It was disappointing that Hunter allowed omegas to be treated as servants in his home.

“They were the only ones who were able to walk past Rivers’ wards,” Hunter explained.

I took it to mean everyone else had bad intentions and had been blocked. I couldn’t say anything about the omega situation after that.

But that had been three days ago. I stayed by Nathan’s side for the most part, pretending to read books while I tracked the movement around us. Besides the people who’d been allowed into the house, a large presence gathered outside. More Lycans. Watching. Waiting. Maybe the people who’d report me to the Lycan King.

The omegas took care of the house and us. And Hunter was gone most of the time. The people outside the property made me anxious, but not as much as trying to figure out what I’d sensed that day.

Since Nathan’s ward locked in place, there had been nothing. So I had to assume whatever that was had been blocked out as well, because it was meant to hurt me. When I’d felt it at the castle, Elijah had come to my window the next day and infected Nathan. But he was dead now. So why did that cloying darkness still feel so close?

At night, Hunter returned to our room, showered and slipped into bed with me. It was strange that I called it our room when it was clearly Hunter’s. My clothes had been delivered as promised, and I was surprised that they took up more space than Hunter’s. I’d already settled into the part of his mate, as dangerous as that was.

But he’d already said he’d keep me here until I had no more use for him. As much as I felt like our very souls were melded now, I couldn’t forget the reasons why getting too close to him was dangerous for us.

He never spoke about what he was doing all day, but I knew it had to do with this magic or this supposed curse. When he slipped into bed, he pulled me to him instantly and spent hours making love to me. No words, but the bond told me everything. Still, I always woke up in the morning with his side of the bed already cold.

At least he’d stopped knotting me.

I knew that meant he was holding back, and that part of me that took control of me when I sucked him off didn’t like that. But I had to be reasonable. To be logical. The threats hanging over us couldn’t be ignored.

On the fourth morning, I’d just left the bedroom when an omega rushed out of Nathan’s room, her cheeks flushed. She didn’t say anything when she went past me, but I was already used to that. I preferred that these omegas not lower their gazes or fawn over me like my father’s servants.

Was something wrong? I rushed to the door the omega had left open and walked in without knocking. And then I skidded to a stop, turned, and rushed all the way out.

But the unwanted picture was already in my head.

Nathan leaning against the headboard, completely naked. His cock in his hand. That slow up and down movement and that groan that worked up his throat.

Hunter would kill someone if he knew I’d seen that. That was the only thought in my head. I went back to my room, hoping to wait an acceptable time before going to see him again. But when I stepped out, Hunter was already walking down the hallway, a scowl on his face, and his simmering rage like a cloud over him. The omega who’d rushed out of Nathan’s room followed behind him, head lowered.

“I have something to speak to Rivers about. Please stay in the bedroom,” he said to me, stopping me in my tracks.

I also had things to ask Nathan. Why didn’t he want me there? But he looked very much like he was in ‘Bureau Director’ mode, so I sighed and turned towards the stairs instead. I was sick of staying in the bedroom, but I didn’t want to argue about that. The quicker Hunter’s agents cleared this nonsense about the curse, the quicker I could make plans to head back to my apartment before things blew up.

Voices stopped me at the bottom of the stairs, and I debated whether to stop and listen or carry on as if they were not there. I chose to continue. What happened in Hunter’s house wasn’t my business. In a few nights, the moon would be full, and whatever lies my family tried to sell me would be shattered.

“There she is. Just tell her to come outside.”

I stopped and looked back at the open main door. An omega stood next to it, her head lowered, hands clasped in front of her, while a huge man who looked very much like a warrior stood on the other side. His face was scared, he had weapons strapped to him, and he was bigger than the warriors in my father’s kingdom. I/sensed his anger as his eyes narrowed on me. My guess was that he couldn’t cross the threshold.

And I wasn’t stupid enough to leave the protection Nathan had erected for me before he passed out.

“Sir, I was told-”

“Don’t worry about what that psycho told you,” the warrior growled at the omega before turning his gaze to me again. “Hey, werewolf. Come here.”

I frowned. Even if I understood that all wolves followed hierarchy, there was no need to be so disrespectful. But I had to be

cautious.

“Do you need something?”

“Are you the werewolf princess? The one they said is dead?”

The omega tensed but didn’t look up at me. She obviously had the full rundown of how she was supposed to answer that question, while I was still in the dark. Hunter claimed they knew who I was, so why was this man asking that question?

Sighing, I turned away. Silence was better than saying something wrong. He could interpret it however he wanted. Hunter would have to brief me first before I interacted with anyone who hadn’t made it past the wards.

“Hey, I’m talking to you!” the man snapped, and then his voice lowered as he growled at the omega, “Grab that bitch’s hair
