HUNTER

“Why the hell were you naked?”

I didn’t like the smirk on Rivers’ face when he sat opposite me at the lounge area near the window wall. He’d showered but hadn’t dressed, choosing a large, fluffy robe instead.

“Well, if your pretty little omega knocked first, she wouldn’t have seen anything,” he said, his gaze turning to the omega quickly stripping the bed. “But I get why she was so flustered. Bet she hasn’t seen a man like me before.”

My impatience almost boiled over. A sharp spike of irritation-and something darker-scraped down my spine, and my head snapped to the omega, catching her red cheeks before she exited with her laundry pile. What was it with Rivers and these women?

“Don’t touch my people,” I growled.

“Relax,” he said. “It’s more fun when their overprotective alpha isn’t close enough to ruin it.”

My mouth twitched, my memories drifted back to the day he’d threatened to ease Kitty’s heat if I didn’t step up. I knew that was self-preservation more than provocation. Rivers knew better than anyone what I would do to anyone who crossed that line.

My beast snarled in warning, not aggression. He’d accepted Rivers’ scent in my territory far quicker than I had.

“Tell me what happened,” I said. “What did you see before you passed out?”

Rivers leaned forward, and the smirk slid from his face.

“I don’t know. It’s the same magic your beta had.”

My gaze sharpened, catching the small tremor that shook his hands. Fear didn’t come easily to Rivers. How strong had it been to do this to him?

“I’ll strengthen the ward now that I feel a little stronger,” he added. “But I really don’t know how long we’ll be safe here.”

“I just need her safe long enough to identify the source.”

Rivers nodded, but his doubt lingered in the air. Was this something I couldn’t protect Kitty from?

I pushed that thought from my head and thought of everything else I needed cleared up.

“Tell me the rest. What happened at the castle?”

“She broke her father’s alpha command,” Rivers said quietly. “Forced herself out of her room.”

Shock rippled through me. She was already that strong. Then what would happen with time, when her wolf learned her abilities and honed her skills?

“I don’t think she knows what she is yet. Have you told her?”

I hadn’t forgotten that Rivers was the only other person who’d seen her shift. I’d thought of silencing him many times for

that reason alone.

“No.”

“Then have you told her you’re the Lycan King?” he whispered, glancing at the door. “If I have to call you Hunter one more

time, your beast will take it as a challenge.”

“I’ll tell her when I’m ready.”

I wasn’t lying to her. This was about containment. I’d deal with the threats before adding more fuel to the fire. Her protection was at the top of my priorities.

“Just tell me what happened,” I prompted.

Rivers glanced at the door and then told me the rest. The way she stood up to her brother, as well as the King. The way her wolf’s rage had convinced even him that she could have taken Kostas out. She hadn’t been submissive, even once. And when he’d woken up in Zachary Blackmore’s home, he and his son told him that Katerina had kicked the omegas out of her room and had caused a fuss until they had been summoned to take care of him.

Kitty had been openly defiant. Nothing like a typical omega.

I took all the information in, not surprised at all. White wolves always turned the hierarchy on its head. Omega ones caused the most disruptions because they were not supposed to have even a shred of dominance in their blood.

“Why didn’t the Blackmores kill you?”

Rivers sat back.

“That was their plan,” he said. “Kostas sent them to lie to her, then finish me off once she was incapacitated. But she told them I was an alpha, and they sensed my magic fighting with Elijah’s. Guess I’m one in a million, too.”

That smirk returned on his face, and I got the feeling I wouldn’t hear the real truth behind that unless I commanded him. Rivers did have more magic in him than I sensed even in full-blooded magic users. His background was unimpressive. He’d already been rogue when he showed up on the Bureau’s radar.

But the most powerful coven in all the kingdoms saw something in him that made them defy their allied werewolf king.

I didn’t want anything about Rivers to impress me, but his ability to cast spells that protected my mate without using any artefacts was the reason he was in my home now.

“Can you extend the perimeter?” I asked.

“Give me another day or two. I’m a little drained right now,” Rivers said. “You can send me your little maid to keep me company while I recover.”

I exhaled and shoved my impatience down again. The perimeter had to come first, so Jasper’s people couldn’t step anywhere near Kitty.

“Do you know about the Lordswood curse?” I asked. This was the main reason I was tolerating him in my home. “The full moon is coming. Something is supposed to happen.”

Rivers frowned and crossed his arms.

“Only rumours. I’ve dismissed almost everything I heard while I travelled pack to pack as a child as just the usual nonsense, but a couple of things stuck out. I heard the reason they started that dating list was to find her true mate.”

My fists clenched before I forced myself to relax.

“There will be no true mate for Katerina,” I growled.

Only me. I wouldn’t give her up for anyone, even if they were ‘fated. The only way our bond would break now was if she severed it herself. I was already past the stage of thinking I could reject her.

“I thought they were just looking for any mate who was strong enough.”

If she had been a regular omega, she would have weakened her mate, and any alphas who agreed to that had to be willing to live in the castle under that overbearing werewolf king.

“Think about it,” Rivers said. “She has the dowry worth more than a whole country, and whoever she mates with will eventually be the alpha of the strongest werewolf pack in the kingdom, complete with the Alpha King title. That would guarantee he’d be stronger than all of them, even if an omega weakened him a little. That’s a pretty sweet deal.”

True.

“They were looking for someone specific,” Rivers said.

“You know this for certain?”
