The three-quarter moon shone through drifting clouds as I stood beside Hunter, my face tilted up, breathing in the cool night air.

Nathan’s words still burned. I’d stayed in Hunter’s bedroom all day, not because of Nathan, but because nowhere else felt safe. There were more Lycans around me, and my guess was that it had to do with the one Hunter killed that morning.

Someone had brought food, and I’d eaten by the back window, watching animals dart through the trees. With every passing minute, my longing to be outside sharpened. The forest around me felt like freedom now, something I didn’t feel anymore.

Maybe I’d never felt it, because even when I’d lived as Kathrine, I’d lived on the edge, always careful and guarded, and avoided meaningful connections.

Hunter’s room sat at the end of the hall, and it seemed to be the largest by far, with forest views on three sides. He could keep an eye on a lot of the property. It made sense since he was the alpha.

But thinking that way brought questions I wasn’t mentally prepared for. I was already overloaded without having to wonder if he could still lead as their alpha while living in my small apartment in the human world.

If we were allowed to be together, would I be forced to choose between my life and his world? Between the Lycans and my own people? My father’s land was dying, and instead of fixing that, they’d tried to force a mating. That was something that I’d have to make them see once the full moon passed, and recovery would take time. Could I still help them, as a Lycan alpha’s mate?

I exhaled and turned to face Hunter. His expression was unreadable, and his emotions somewhat muted in the bond. The moment he’d come to the room, I’d felt something was off. But he’d asked if I was ready for that run, and my wolf had surged, the excitement drowning everything else.

If there was something wrong, I didn’t want to know about it until after the run.

“Six days until the full moon,” he said.

Until the ‘curse’ was fulfilled. Part of me wondered if I could continue to ignore Kostas’ warning, but ultimately, that didn’t matter. I was already mated to someone who wouldn’t hurt me. Right? Being a Lycan wouldn’t change that; I already knew his heart.

But the Lycan King-

I shoved that thought out of my head and walked into the forest. Tonight, I was letting go of all my worries. Tomorrow, I’d think about it again.

“Will you lead?” I asked, glancing back, noticing he hadn’t moved.

“Do you want me to?”

His voice was quiet, and it echoed in the silent night. That question carried a weight that settled deep in my

bones, as if my answer would change things, or I was answering a completely different question. But of course, he had to lead. I didn’t know this forest well enough.

“Yes.”

Hunter stepped through the treeline, dragging his T-shirt over his head. My gaze lowered to his defined abs, and my core fluttered. When he finally stood naked in front of me, his cock was already rock hard. I swallowed, already anticipating what the night would bring.

He stalked closer to me and pulled me into him. Our heartbeats thumped so loudly they were all I could hear.

“Then take your clothes off, Kitty.”

Kitty. I’d chosen my role for the night. Without wasting a second, I stepped away from him and pulled my dress over my head. I was already bare underneath. Hunter sucked in a breath, and that warmth bloomed in our bond. Emotions he’d yet to say out loud, and those he hadn’t repeated since he found out who I was, all rolled into me.

No, this man could never hurt me. I’d never doubt that again.

“Shift and run, Kitty. Let me chase you.”

I didn’t need to be told twice. A smile was already stretching my face when I turned from him and shifted. This was only my third time, but I noticed immediately how quick it was. One second, my bare toes dug into the earth as I braced myself to run, and the next second, dirt shifted under my paws as I launched myself deeper into the forest.

The thick tree trunks looked smaller in my wolf form. I hadn’t noticed that on my first shift, but now I wondered how big I was. Still, I wasn’t anywhere as big as that grey-furred Lycan bearing down on me. Even with my heightened vision, it was hard to really see his size because of the trees and shrubs around us. Only his red eyes were clear, higher above the ground than any wolf I’d ever seen.

I didn’t feel any fear, even as the eyes appeared closer and closer. Even as they darted from side to side, and sometimes vanished, only to appear in a different, unexpected place. My mate was hunting me. That earlier excitement turned into something else. Heat burned through my veins, magnified, as everything else in the bond was.

The wind blew into my face as I pushed myself harder, increasing my speed. The tree trunks blurred past. Twigs snapped under my paws, and those little animals I’d watched from the window scurried away. They heard me coming from a distance away.

Could I make myself quieter? As if my thought was a command, the air silenced around me. I felt lighter as the earth quietened beneath my feet. My wolf deftly avoided branches and shrubs while maintaining my speed, and a rush of strength poured into me.

My confidence skyrocketed. I felt like I could do anything, take on anyone.

I ran for hours, only circling around the boundary marked clearly by Nathan’s magic. It had been invisible in my human form, but now that boundary was a golden haze that rippled with power. By the time dawn crept in, my limbs burned, and I slowed down. And when we reached a clearing beside a stream, the giant Lycan who’d kept up with me launched into me, tackling me to the ground effortlessly.
