HUNTER

I told Rivers first.

He was already subdued, standing by the window, head bowed. If he could have gone anywhere else, he would have, the moment he looked at Kitty like that when I carried her upstairs. Now I had to fight the urges clawing

at me.

It wasn’t just that day. It was the porch, too, before Kitty put her mark on me, when she’d gone into heat and touched him. I still remembered the look on his face. The want. And every second he was in my home, I struggled not to end him. It didn’t matter that the beast tolerated his presence.

Rivers flinched and bowed. I didn’t realise I’d growled until the sound filled the room.

“We’re going to meet the Blackmore coven after Kitty wakes.”

I turned to leave before I did something stupid, then stopped. This wasn’t a trip I could ambush him with. It was life or death. Kitty’s wards depended on him being alive.

That was the only reason I turned and sat.

Rivers didn’t smirk or sit this time. He stayed standing, his wolf pressing beneath his skin.

“The curse is real,” I said. “The Blackmores were involved. According to them, in a few days, Kitty will die by my hand.”

That was when Rivers looked at me, his shock rolling off him. And with it came the stuff I didn’t want to feel from him. That surge of protectiveness over my mate. That sharp tang of grief, as if she were his to grieve for. The possessiveness.

My fists clenched again, and I looked away.

“It won’t happen.”

Even if I had to reject her and hand her over to Kostas, just until the danger passed. If it passed.

“They need to see all three of us,” I continued. “Somewhere the Lordswoods can’t easily monitor. But whoever targeted Kitty is still out there, so stay alert. My uncle, Kostas, and whoever worked with Elijah. If I’m incapacitated, you take her to safety.”

“Yes, Your “He cut himself off at my sharp look. “Yes, Hunter.”

I stood and left before my restraint snapped. Why did I have to entrust Kitty to him again? This man, who lived for his multiple problematic sexual encounters. This man, who had an obvious hard-on for my mate.

But she was mine. I had to force myself to remember that. She could never touch anyone else while our bond thrived.

Kitty was walking out of the ensuite when I entered my room. She was completely bare, her skin flushed from the shower, and her hair still wet. Despite how quickly she’d healed, my marks were still visible. I’d been too hard on her.

My body tightened instantly. My gaze slowly slid over her, watching her breath catch and the deepening flush. The air bloomed with her arousal.

Even now, after hours of being used by me, she still wanted me.

I cleared my throat and walked to the back of the room. The long curtains stood wide open, but no one would dare spy on my room.

“I need to talk to you. Get dressed and join me,” I said.

Her apprehension hummed through the bond. It felt like she’d been waiting for the shoe to drop since I took her out for the run last night. It didn’t take her long to join me as she towel-dried her hair.

“What happened?”

“We have more information about this curse,” I answered.

“That’s it?” she asked.

I cocked my head. She was still too naive about the world she lived in. Too trusting.

“Let’s say it’s real, which I don’t believe it is,” she said, “I’m already mated, and you’d never hurt me.”

A hint of her unease leaked through her calm facade. But I couldn’t blame her for being insecure about me. I’d already shown her I was capable of tearing her apart.

But I didn’t want to scare her before we met the coven.

“Curses don’t work like that,” I said. “And this is more than that, it’s a prophecy. Your life was spoken long before you were even born.”

Kitty sighed and sat down, looking out at the forest. Her longing replaced the unease. With the weight of what was coming, our run felt like it had happened a long time ago.

“If you believe it, then I’ll go,” she said. “But we have bigger things to worry about than that. There’s something out there lurking in the shadows, remember?”

How could I forget?

“It may all be connected,” I said. “Rivers will come with us. If anything goes wrong, he can protect you.”

Her shoulders tensed.

“He agreed to that?”

Had she noticed it too? The way Rivers looked at her? What he felt? I swallowed my words before I asked. I wasn’t an insecure teenager. Our bond told me everything I needed to know.

“Of course,” I said. “I still have some preparations to make, so I’ll head down and send someone with some food.”

Not insecure at all. But I bolted out of the room before I said more than I should. I’d already said too much after she collapsed on my chest that morning.

In my office, I pulled the burner phone out and called Tanner to coordinate. I wasn’t leaving Kitty unprotected even for a second. Six days. That was how long I had to make sure Kitty lived through this.

“I have something else to say,” Tanner continued, “but maybe that will be for after the meeting.”

What else could fate throw at me right now? Was it not enough that I was already wound so tight because of everything I had to do in the coming days?

“It’s April. Her team reported multiple attempted breaches of the perimeter they set around her,” Tanner said. “It’s Lordswood. I suggest we move her family to a safehouse again.”

Why was Kostas going after her? I’d expected him to keep trying to see Kitty, but he hadn’t come close since that day. April’s pack was on the border between the werewolf kingdom and mine, but she was still closer to me than Lordswood territory. Kostas was pushing boundaries. My beast snarled. Killing him would have made everything easier, but Kitty would never allow it. She’d stopped me twice already.

“Bring her here after the meeting,” I said.

I couldn’t be sure if she was still a target, and I didn’t want Rivers’ magic stretched too thin if he set up another ward somewhere else. I wasn’t even sure if his magic worked like that.
