I sat opposite Kitty on the dusty chairs while Zachary Blackmore stood over his son, helping him drink some water. Randall was still struggling to breathe, but he wasn’t in danger anymore.
My gaze returned to Kitty. Her shoulders were hunched, and she glanced at Randall from behind her lashes multiple times. She bit her nails, too, something I’d never seen her do before. She was nervous. A sharp contrast to how fierce she’d looked when she’d almost killed a man.
I hid the smile behind my glass as I drank the water the other coven members had offered me.
She’d looked like a demon, pinning him down like that. Her aura had surged, brighter than I’d ever sensed it, and her warning growl had given me goosebumps. I’d seen her fight in her gym, but now, after she shifted, I’d heard bones crack when Randall hit the ground.
Would the Blackmores realise that wasn’t typical of an omega?
That wiped the smile from my face. I set the glass down and glanced at Rivers, who leaned on the wall near the door, his arms crossed as if he had no interest in what was about to be said. But the tension radiating from him told a different story. He couldn’t hide it.
Three other men from the Blackmore coven stood on the other side, while one kept watch with Tanner and his team outside.
“I’m sorry,” Kitty said again. “I thought he had a gun.”
The offending object was a leather scroll case, adorned with silver and gems. It was probably older than dirt, but now it was dented and missing half its gems. I’d already offered compensation, but everyone in the room knew how truly priceless such an old family heirloom was.
“It’s not your fault,” Zachary said, his voice sounding tired and old. He pulled a chair and sat beside his son with a heavy sigh. “We were too anxious. I should have come out by myself to meet you.”
“I’m okay, Your Highness,” Randall said, his voice sounding raspy. “Trully. And the scroll is for you to take, anyway.”
Our attention was drawn back to the case on the table. Even though it was now a little worse for wear, the magic rippling from it was undeniable. We weren’t going to touch it unless I knew for sure it was safe.
“What’s in it?” Kitty asked.
“Our eldest Seer wrote these before your mother and father even met,” Zachary said.
Great. The older the Seer, the more powerful his visions and prophecies were. And if he’d already foretold Christos and Maria’s story, then I didn’t like where this conversation was going.
“What does it say?” Kitty asked.
I was glad she hadn’t acted impulsively and touched the scroll herself.

“He told of how they would meet. Of the war and the short period of peace after it.”
I tensed.

“The suffering to come,” Zachary continued. “And then he wrote about you. Almost everything else has come to pass. I already see the signs of the last few starting.”
He looked at me when he said that. As if anyone needed a Seer to know my feud with Christos would only end one way. But I already knew how powerful a Seer’s prophecies were. I wasn’t there to dispute it; I needed a solution.
“With you lies the fate of your people,” Zachary continued. “Only your true mate can save you.”
“Save me from what?”
“On the first full moon after your shift, you’ll be found dead in your home. Nailed to the wall, your insides pulled out, eyes gouged out.”
I froze. Kitty’s shock mirrored mine. That was how Elijah had done it.
“But Elijah is dead,” Kitty said quickly. “There must be some mistake.”
A deep frown marred Zachary’s forehead. He didn’t like that. His coven was the oldest and strongest. It wasn’t just the magic carved into their bones; their very foundation was sacred. There was a myth that their ancestors had danced among the gods.
The Blakemores were never wrong.
“We don’t make mistakes. The signs are already there. Your land is dead, and your people are unsettled. There has been too much chaos around you,” Zachary said. “Your father was already told the solution, but you have defied him at every turn.”
I growled, the warning echoing in the empty cabin. I had not come to be told to hand Kitty over to her family. I would do that if it came to it, but not before exhausting other options first.
“To find a true mate or marry my brother?” Kitty asked, her lip curling in disgust.
“Kosts will protect-”
“I’m supposed to believe the man who sent you to kill his friend just because Nathan took care of me will protect me?” Kitty asked. “The man who’s done nothing but force his will on me and tell me to ‘do as I’m told’? That man? He’s the one I’m supposed to trust with my life?”
Kitty’s anger roared through the bond. I hadn’t realised how deep her resentment for Kostas was.
“Your pack is desperate-”
“I don’t care how desperate they are. I’m not sacrificing my life for anyone. You might as well take that scroll back and use it for reference when you teach younger generations about the time your eldest Seer was wrong.”

Nathan chuckled from his spot by the door, but that died quickly. He, more than anyone else, knew the coven was right.
Zachary sat still in his chair, not looking directly at anyone. So far, he’d yet to show his power, but I’d sensed it all the way to the cabin. He could make life difficult for us if he wanted to.
