The car ride was probably the most uncomfortable thing I’d experienced in a long time.

I watched the trees blur past while Hunter drove, his shoulder tight, his hand resting possessively on my thigh. His presence wrapped around me like a thick blanket. It was protective and territorial.

And Nathan-Mr Rivers-sat behind me, out of sight, yet his tension eclipsed everything.

Was this why he’d said keeping my distance was safer for him? But Hunter and I were already bonded. This jealousy wasn’t supposed to be an issue, yet something was clearly off.

I replayed the past few days in my head. Did I miss something? What the hell happened between them? Hunter had taken care of Mr Rivers the night he’d arrived. He’d washed him and made him comfortable in the guest room, the room closest to ours, instead of any on the other wing of the house.

But I didn’t ask any of those questions. Instead, I focused on the meeting.

Mr Rivers hadn’t told me anything about his time with the Blackmores, and that dark magic that had seeped into his body and almost taken his life. Or why being an alpha had made the Blackmores spare his life when Kostas wanted him dead. Would they answer my questions instead?

A sigh slipped out of me, and I almost glanced back, but Hunter’s fingers tightened briefly on my thigh. I faced forward, my head in a state of chaos. A possessive Lycan was more dangerous than a possessive werewolf. Was this why Hunter believed there was some truth in this curse?

We passed several Lycan territories, my shoulders tightening more with each one. I hadn’t realised so many Lycan packs still existed. The forest here was denser than the werewolf kingdom, and the wildlife in it was thriving and abundant, despite the heavy auras that pressed even through the car. Adaptation over the generations, maybe. They’d learned to survive alongside monsters.

After half an hour, several cars joined us, a couple of them in front and three behind us. Bureau vehicles. The part of me that had liked the strict rules and procedures of the Bureau wanted to ask why he was using work resources for a personal problem. But I took one look at his set jaw and swallowed my questions.

“We’re switching cars. Move fast when I stop,” Hunter said.

Ten minutes later, he stopped at the side of the road and unbuckled my seatbelt before he did his own. He didn’t even glance at Mr Rivers.

“Co.”

We were in the second car moments later, moving seamlessly. I couldn’t sense anyone around us except the people in the cars. Was he being a bit too careful? Was there anyone at all around him who’d dare to challenge

him?

But I remember the Lycan King and stopped questioning things. There was no such thing as ‘too careful.

At a junction, the convoy split. The car in front of us turned right, and we turned left. I risked looking back

and noticed there was now only one vehicle behind us. The car we’d left the house in was now heading in the opposite direction. It was a clever tactic, but very basic. And any wolves following us could use their noses to follow the right car. But I bit back my words again.

An hour later, the road changed. Hunter turned onto a dirt road that I would have missed if I had been driving. Or had it just appeared out of nowhere? Something subtly brushed against my senses. I straightened, looking outside, my wolf on full alert. A golden haze similar to what I’d seen along Hunter’s property boundary danced through the tree tops and shimmered across the path in front of us like it was alive. We’d arrived in a Blackmore coven territory.

The haze looked like multiple golden wisps, like threads leading us somewhere. My knowledge about magic was minimal, but I was sure I’d never come across anything similar in any books I’d studied or any of the research I’d done for the Bureau cases as an intern.

Why could I see this magic so clearly? Was it stronger or weaker than Nathan’s?

Suddenly, the reason we were there pressed down on me, and the apprehension I’d felt earlier returned. Someone was about to tell me the truth my family had hidden from me my whole life, and I wasn’t sure what to think. Even if it turned out to be a load of bullshit, it was the reason my life had turned out this way.

After another half an hour, the golden threads turned off the dirt path onto a bumpier one, and a small cabin, lit dimly outside, came into view. Hunter parked in front of it and waited for the other cars to flank us. And then he exhaled and looked at me.

“Keep an open mind about what you hear. Don’t dismiss anything,” he said. “Stay here, I’ll check it out first.”

Why did it sound like he was trying to convince me that I was about to die?

He left the car and approached the cabin. I sensed no auras inside. Maybe we were early. I took the chance to look back at Mr Rivers. His face was drawn and guarded. Nothing like the man I’d come to trust.

“Nathan… Mr Rivers,” I whispered. “What happened to you?”

His shoulders tensed, but he didn’t look at me.

“Not now,” he said tightly.

Would he really never speak to me again? I ignored that hurt and looked ahead again. Hunter stood facing the car instead of the cabin, his hands balled at his side, his gaze pinned on me. The windows were tinted, but I knew he could see me.

Behind him, several men walked out of the cabin. But the cabin had been empty! They walked slowly, almost as if they were stalking him. The man in front reached him first, and something glinted in his hand. A weapon?

My heart slammed against my chest, and I was out of the car before I could think, standing between Hunter and the threat. I kicked his weapon aside and slammed him down and, in seconds, had the man pinned to the ground by his throat.

I didn’t know that growl came from me until I felt Hunter’s hand on my back, rubbing gently, calming me.
